Carry - Taurus 24/7 .40
Next to pillow - Glock 22 .40
Zombie banger - Remington 870
Singin from the rooftops - Bushmaster Varminter Comp
I would look at what Colt has to offer.
They make many great carry pistols for less than your budget.
Pound for pound Colt builds the best production pistol on the market.
From my cold dead hands.
If it ain't a Colt it is a copy.
Depends:
If caliber is not important then a 9MM SA EMP would be my first choice.
If weight is not a concern then the 45 ACP DW CBOB is a fantastic gun.
If a lighter 45 is desired there is the S&W (Commander sized) PD models.
The LW XSE Colt Commander is a viable option but they have several features that require changing before I will carry them. (Remove ambi safety, Replace Duck Bill GS & FLGR). Also unlike a lot of Colt lovers (and I am one) I will not claim that they are the "Best". I've bought 6 (NIB) between 1973 and today and not one has run out of the box. This is not just a Colt put down as in reality only 14 of 27 that I bought have run 100% OOTB.
The old man said, “1911's & S&W's”, but the young man wanted to travel a different road. Finally, after many hard miles the now aged, worn and tired man came to understand; 1911's & S&W's were all he ever needed.
at that price range, you might consider a dan wesson commander bobtail. they use quite a few match-grade parts from ed brown, STI and other custom or semi-custom makers. and though they are lesser known than, say, colt or springfield armory, folks who have them say they there isn't a better bang for your buck.
i'll be getting one myself in the next month or so.
prior planning prevents piss-poor performance.

My vote would be for the Kimber Tactical Ultra II (or the Pro size), mine has been great out of the box for 3 yrs now with zero problems, haven't had to do a single thing to it (other than shoot it). Has been 100% dependable with both JHP & FMJ (I've mainly used WWB 230 gr, but have on occasion put other brands throught it without issue). Great carry weight, size, & accurate.
I recently acquired a S&W 1911PD for less than half your high-end limit. It's commander length which should make it easier to conceal but I have yet to carry it. I still need to get a holster. And I really want some of those super thin grips. But I love how it shoots. And I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to tear it down.

Just FYI, >$1500 means Greater than $1500.
Try <$1500 if you mean Less than $1500.
For carry you need a HK45c which solves all the 1911 flaws.

Check out STI guns.
Spartan .45 5" run under 600 bucks and are outstanding pistols.
The .45 5" lawman series is 1200 bucks.
STI does a great job of offering the same custom features as the big makers, but their quality control and fitting is better from what I have seen, and their fire control components are top notch and need no replacing.
If I was going to spend $1500 on a 1911, I would have one custom made by a well know gunsmith.
I have a serious 1911 addiction and just had another one made by a well known gunsmith and it cost me $1500.00.
But if you don't want to go that route, I would suggest a S&W PD with a 4.25 inch barrel. Or any S&W with a 5 inch barrel for that matter.
You could even get both of them for $1500 if you buy used..
Don't forget very few people can get a 1911 and resist tinkering with it.
i have one and love it. you might have to look around to get a new one for 1500.00 but i see lightly used ones for that.
there aren't many things you will need to add to a PC1911 except some mags and gunleather.
i have shot ragged one hole groups at 50yds from a rest. the PC is the gun i would grab if i knew my life depended on accuracy.

Les Bear PII.![]()
Les Baer.... take your pick TRP. PII
I would also look at the Dan Wesson Valor. For $1300 you get a lot of gun for the money.

SA Loaded or MC Operator, switch out the MSH to replace the stupid lock. Then spend the rest on some mags and holster, and lots of ammo
Colt!
or a DW Bobtail...![]()

I would have to agree on something from Les Baer, a Springfield Operator at the right price, or you could just move into my neighborhood and I'll build you one if you can "scratch my back" a bit. You know, buy enough parts for me so we can BOTH have a gun when I'm finished. Heh heh...![]()
Let's all stand together, so we won't have to stand apart later on.
Freedom is worth the price. Count the cost.
I would get the Sig GSR, with enough money left over to stock up on .45 ACP.

Wow! That's a good lookin' gun. I'm afraid I might actually have to dress up and use a Wilson sharkskin belt and holster if I carried that Sig.![]()

My humble submission: Colt XSE commander ~$850.
The way Les Baer frames are sculpted at the junction of the trigger guard and front strap, that lets the weapon sit lower and more snugly in my hand, has me spoiled for anything other than Les Baer. I am not sure if a new Baer can be had for $1500, but I would wait longer, save, and pay the price. Of course, for a plainer yet custom 1911, a Baer frame could be used to build a custom gun.
Have Colts, will travel.
For carry, the Dan Wesson CBOB hands down. Or any of the DW's.
Honorable mention goes to Fusion Firearms, but you may be pushing that $1500 limit.

An upper end Kimber for that much. You won't be sorry
Doesn't Jeff Cooper's (In Blessed Memory) place sell souped up 1911's? $1500 should cover the cost.
