If you could go about $250 higher, a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special.
If you can't, a Colt Gunsite Pistol.

Couldn't remember the name, Gunsite! Thanks.
Though I may be crucified for this I say get a RIA 1911 you'll have around $1000 left for ammo and it's a good gun. Sure it doesn't have all that fancy smancy tactical matchtastic stuff in it but this is a carry gun not a race gun. Having all those nice GI spec parts means it's a lot less likely to bind up on you when you least need it and if you need to tear it apart without tools you won't have problems. Plus if you ever use it to defend yourself and it disappears into some police evidence locker for several months it won't hurt as much. Mine fed hollow points right out of the box, in fact the first magazine I fired though it was a mixture of HP and wad cutter ammo.
Why do I feel the need to correct almost every girl who claims she isn't pretty?
At that price point you have more than a few options. Dan Wesson, S&W, Springfield and Colt all make top notch stuff.
I am quite happy with my LW Commander and my Gold Cup

The Dan Wesson Bobtail is one of my regular carry guns...as is the Springfield Armory TRP. Both are very well made easily had for under what you have to spend (although the TRP is creeping up there now). Dollar for dollar, tough to beat the Dan Wesson Bobtail
Kimber CDP II you just can't beat for the money. Check it out.
While I've never shot a Dan Wesson, the reputation, popularity, and solid remarks about the gun keep growing and all seem to favor the entire 1911 line. My local gunshop has a Bobtail in stock, and from what I've seen on initial inspection, it certainly looks like an excellent pistol, as has been mentioned here. The craftsmanship looks first rate and my guess is that they will make a big dent in the 1911 market once their pistols are better known and more shooters buy them.
Might I recommend a Kimber Series I if you can locate one, which you should be able to do with a little patience and diligence. Most seem to think the Series I pistols by Kimber were made when Kimber's production was in it's prime; it was all pre Series II and before all the bad press that Kimber received over poor quality control. They were the big kids on the block and still are saleswise, but I, for one, think their Series II pistols can't hold a candle to the original Series I. A full size 1911 can be found in the $700-1000 range, and they are worth the money paid for them.
If I had to do it all over again, I would've bought my brother in law a Dan Wesson instead of the Kimber Pro Carry II that was his graduation present. I tried to find a Series I Kimber, but had no luck. Either would've been my first choice, and I highly recommend them to you, too.

That's funny.Originally posted by Jehu
For carry you need a HK45c which solves all the 1911 flaws.
