What, in Gawd's Green Earth, is an SKA?

Blogging about a local news story about some asshat who tried to board a MARC train with an "assault" rifle (insert panicky newscaster voice here), and they say he was carrying an SKA semi-automatic assault rifle. I've never heard of such a critter. Are the newscasters retarded, or is it just me? I even googled "SKA rifle" and came up with zip. I figure A is close to S on the computer, so maybe it was a typo, but then why would they SAY it on the radio???

Its a new hybrid mix between an SKS and an AK. I thought everyone knew that. From what I have herd, they are right up there with the Glock 7 as far as technology!

Ska is a kind of music, silly! Oh, you mean a gun. I have no idea. One of the profs in my department said something about an AK-15 once. Maybe it's something like that. I'm guessing they meant either an SKS or an AKS and just got confused.

If some copy boy printed SKA on the Teleprompter, the hynotized anchor will read it w/o questioning it.

I even saw two co-anchors read exactly the same copy one right after the other. The second anchor got all the way thru before the 1st said, "Haven't we heard that somewhere before?" It was on bloopers but it just shows you that anchors don't read or do any research on what they're about to say. They're just faces with voices.

Well, it's been fixed. It now says, "Authorities said they found a Chinese-made 7.62mm SKS assault rifle aboard the train. The weapon was unloaded, Bealefeld said, adding Seeley had numerous rounds in a magazine and others loose."

I knew it was likely a typo, but I wanted to make fun of the breathless way they reported on this thing... and then got the name wrong!

And yes, I've done radio long enough to know that you definitely have to be careful when reading copy! My old news director once told me a story about a fishing story he was doing. He failed to read the copy ahead of time, and wound up pronouncing the words, "Several dozen master baiters" on the air.

It's good they recaptured it before it was able to load its magazine and chamber a round, or something.

SKa is short for Sport Ka, the greatest sporting automobile ever. Some have labeled it an Assault car.

Calling an SKS an assault rifle is a little like calling a MiniCooper a sports car.

The 'a' key is awfully darn close to the 's' key.

This is Ron Burgundy saying good night San Diego, go *&^% yourself.

The important point to note here, again, is that, again, it happened on the other side of the river, AGAIN.
