    Antique Military Bore Inspection Device

    Sorry I can't post pics; technologically challenged . . .

My neighbor was given two items by his stepfather (who is in his 60s, and says his father gave them to him). They appear to be "periscope" style bore light devices.

Each item is a small, rectangular, metal "box," with two short (maybe 1/2") metal tubes. These tubes are at 90 degree angles (one extends from the end of the rectangle, the other from the side). Inside is a mirror, set at a 45 degree angle. Shine a flashlight into one tube, and the beam is reflected to shine through the other tube.

It looks like the device could fit into the action of a .30 cal rifle (.30-06, 7.62 NATO, .30-40 ????), and used in conjunction with a light to inspect the rifle bore.

I've never seen any such item at any gun show or in any literature. Anyone have any idea re: their age, specific use, etc.?

Yessir, if they're what I think they are, they're for real.

Don't know value, but they were (ARE) a handy gadget.

Played with one as a kid...persecuted by one in high school ROTC.

Reflects/directs light bunches better than a thumbnail.

Really used to be quite common, and they are hardly an antique,

Thanks for the replies; never thought they were valuable (dollar-wise), but I'd never seen one before; must not be observant enough at the "military stuff" tables at the shows . . .
