Large Autos - Best Concealment Method

For those of you with large autos as your CCW, what have you found the best concealment method to be that maximizes both comfort and concealability. If you wear IWB, please let us know where on your belt you carry it (behind the hip, in front, etc.).

I currently carry a Ruger KP944 IWB at 2:00. It takes a bit of getting used to when driving,as the gun's length tends to dig into my upper leg a bit. I've found that for me at least, that location is the best for concealment and comfort for all-day carrying without constantly adjusting it to keep it in a comfortable position.

Depends on your dress and body type, mostly. I carried a 5" 1911 (steel frame) IWB at 4:00 for a year, before deciding it was to heavy. The cheap holster I had did not help......

I am 5'10" and 190 lbs..... and a long t-shirt hid it well enough.....

my large auto is concealed in the garage. though i dont really consider a Toyota Supra as a large auto.
my other large auto is IWB at 4 o'clock: it a Kimber at a 22 degree cant which for my build [6'1 & 185]avoids hip bone discomfort even in my cars that have bucket seats.
5" Kimber gets heavy on a long day and the same holster [it has retention] fits my Defender which is so much lighter and i am only giving up 1 round. no big deal...i hope.

I carry a Ruger P90 in a Milt Sparks VM2 at 2:30 under a untucked shirt, and have gotten so used to it, that I forget I have it on a lot of the time.

Tailored sports coat or suit. If needed, clear it with the tailor first--no need to "surprise" him or any other customers. Wear your chosen firearm/holster to the fitting, and to the final alterations.

I'm quite comfortable wearing a steel, Commander size 1911, and it conceals very well. I favor a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 IWB holster worn on a good belt at about 3:30. My usual cover garment is a light vest or a leather jacket.

I carry a full-size M1911 in an IWB of my own design. I think this is the most practical and comfortable concealment holster I've ever owned, if I do say so myself.

I carry a Glock 21 in a Blade-Tech paddle holster and usually cover with a Concealed Carry Outfitters Professional vest in the spring/summer/fall or a pull-over type sweater in the fall/winter.

I can fairly easily carry the 21 and a reload with this setup.

Mexican carry or an IWB holster. BTW, I don't need a lecture on Mexican carry. I've been doing it for years 10 years and never had a problem. I always wear a belt and tend to carry with no round in the chamber but I'm quick at racking the slide on draw from the waistband. I know I might not be able to have both hands free but for close contact I have a really big knife also.

    Thumbs up

I have a bunch of holsters, but I've recently bought a couple of Clipdraws. They have several models. I got one for a 1911 that attaches under the right grip and is held on by the grip screws. I also got a few of the "universal" Clipdraws that attach to the frame or slide with a magical strip of 3M double sided tape. I had doubts about that but now I'm convinced that the stuff really sticks and won't come off. You put the tape on the gun anywhere you choose as long as it's at least 3 inches by 1/4 inch. Then you add the metal Clipdraw base to the tape and press firmly and evenly. Finally, you screw the clip onto the base with provided screws.

You then clip your gun inside the waistband (I put the clip between the pants and the belt), tighten your belt to a comfort level and that's it. It's like Mexican carry with a little security. It doesn't move. Now I have them on a Dan Wesson CBOB, a Sig 225 and even a Springfield XD45. For sure, the XD is a large pistol and I haven't carried it much in a holster because it's really hard to cover without a bulge or a print. I carried it today- all day- and it stays tight to the body and covered with a flannel shirt.

I like to carry at the 3:30 position most of the time and all of these pistols fit nicely this way. It also works for crossdraw or appendix carry.

BTW, you can supposedly remove the Clipdraw from your gun pretty easily without leaving a mark. I haven't tried that and may not until I decide to sell one of the guns.

One problem is that it doesn't fit my CZ Rami because there just isn't enough room to fit it.

You can see them on their website http://www.clipdraw.com/ and you can find them a little cheaper on Ebay. If you ever try one, let me know what you think. Also, I have no financial or familial interest in the company.

IWB if the pistol is as thin as a 1911 which is my favorite pistol anyway. I mostly carry a Light Weight Commander, but will carry others such as S&W's 45 and 10MM as they are also as thin and somethings Sigs or CZs with the right holster. Ky Tac is also good as it's thin too.

M&P 40. Appendix carry @ approx 1:30 in a Crossbreed supertuck. It dissapears under a loose, untucked T-shirt or a tucked in dress shirt.

I carry a Springfield XDm in 40 S&W. It is a fullsize/service size gun and I find that carry in a slide on my strong side is easiest. A good belt and holster is mandatory for carrying a full size handgun.
The holster needs, for me, be a high ride type.

carry methods for full size 1911a1 models

Depending on your build, height, dress style, etc; I'd suggest a well made IWB holster like the Kramer, Milt Sparks, Ted Blocker/Ayoob LFI style. A good Blackhawk SERPA holster would do well for belt carry. It is plastic but level 2 with the design that fits different belts or carry types(FBI, cross draw, standard). The SERPA's price and colors are just right too, , www.blackhawk.com

The Blackhawk check 6 rig has merit but the other brands are what savvy shooters and most "professionals" use.

Big ups to the Galco Miami Classic 2 and the Aker shoulder rig, if you are a right handed user, .

These are my choices for a full size 1911a1 .45acp model.

My large auto wouldn't fit in the garage, since it's a 26-footer. Had to build an R/V port for it, which shelters but doesn't conceal it.

    I don't carry a large auto-loading pistol. I stick to pocket-carrying a G27.

I second the clipdraw. Have one and carry a EAA Witness at 4 o"clock. Nice, secure, and comfy.

Browning Hi-Power, 4:00 in a belt-loop Yaqui, strong gunbelt. Sticks right to my love handle, does not print through a shirt tail or jacket.

Full size 1911, IWB at 4 o'clock in a Rosen ARG on a beltman belt, all day everyday. Conceals easily under an untucked polo shirt.

I think Thanksgiving might be a pretty good contributing factor to being able to conceal a large auto on my person -- esp. if it was once a month.

Actually, I am struck by how hard it is to carry a gun -- a small one even -- in a way that's neither obvious nor uncomfortable. I'm about your (OP's) height and weight; I own a smallish Kahr (most concealable gun I have), and I have tried many times to figure out how people wear these without being spotted every 2 minutes. My WA CCW is in progress, and I'd like to be able to actually carry

If I bend to do anything, I can feel it lifting my shirt, for instance. (That is, trying it around the house -- trying to stay scrupulously legal.)

Sadly I don't think there is any universal advice. You'll have to play around with a quality belt and holsters until you find what works for you. It took me a few holsters to find what I believe is the best concealment.
Every social movement (*snip*) that tries to break the bonds of mindless convention and tradition and that defies established privilege gets accused of being rude and worse, much worse, and there are always weak apologists for the status quo who use that pathetic etiquette excuse to try and silence the revolutionaries. Successful revolutionaries ignore the admonitions about which fork to use for their salad because they care only to grab the steak knife as they launch themselves over the table. -- Richard Dawkins

I either carry IWB behind my strong side hip or OWB just in front of my strongside hip.

Either works for me, I just vary depending on dress/season.

I carry some fairly large firearms this way (Ruger P90/97/345).

A good quality gun belt makes all the difference in the world. You buy a 100.00 holster and hang it on a 10.00 belt from Walmart and you've just wasted money on the holster. Spend some cash on a good gun belt and you'll consider it money well spent.
