    Quail

Hunted quail a couple of decades ago. Now may have a chance again- what sort of chokes and size of shot are to be expected. What sort of shots should I expect? All coming up from my feet? Taking flight 20 yards out and crossing? Etc. I think we might have a dog with us.

Improved Cyclinder or Modified choke is what I use, loaded with low bass #8's. If you are hunting with a pointing dog, expect an eruption at your feet. Flushers should put birds in the air within 10 to 30 yards of you. I have only hunted them with dogs so I have no clue what you should expect without one. It is my experience that the covey will mostly go in the same direction when they take flight (within 120 degrees of each other) but sometimes they go freaking everywhere so take notice of the dogs and people.

I agree, mostly, with '06. The only thing I would do is use Improved Cyl. as the tightest choke if hunting over dogs. Have fun, and be safe.

I've noticed that if I did not see them early and am hunting without a dog I always get mostly flushing right in front of me unless spooked already. Then they fly earlier but I agree with the other guys improved is best, and I use Low #8.
Some day my children will have a lot of guns and that will bring a smile to my face.
