    Exclamation What gun for Chimpanzee?

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090217/...mpanzee_attack

HARTFORD, Conn. – A 200-pound domesticated chimpanzee who once starred in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola was shot dead by police after a violent rampage that left a friend of its owner badly mauled.

Now imagine Zombie Chimps. Be afraid, be very afraid.

    potato cannon

    loaded with bananas

seriously a shorty shotgun at that range (police at bay in car) would have cleared the apes mind.

    I have a few questions:
I wonder if she said "don't worry he doesn't bite"...
Does a leash law cover this guy?
What kind of fines should she be looking at for this?
He's gotten loose before and had police chasing him around and she still hasn't taken precautions?
tying in with the leash law thing: He rides "shotgun" in cars? but has the capability to open doors etc and is not leashed somehow??

At the time of the 2003 incident, police said the Herolds told them the chimpanzee was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table and drank wine from a stemmed glass. He also brushed his teeth using a Water Pik, logged onto the computer to look at pictures, and watched television using the remote control, police said.
my 15 yr old brother doesn't even do all that for himself...

what an odd, sad (likely complicated) story of primate interaction.

There was another discussion like this a while back after a couple was mauled in California. A poster shared a story about his father's experience in Africa. Seems two chimps attacked their camp, and the father grabbed his rifle, which happened to be in 9.3x62mm. The first shot put one chimp down. The second shot knocked the remaining chimp over, who promptly got up and scooted into the bush.

Chimps are nasty animals; extremely strong and unpredictable. People who fall for Hollywood's anthropomorphization of them as cuddly and cute are in for a surprise.

We all know that the only responsible caliber for zombie chimps is 25mm HEAT rounds, with an M2 for BUG (in an ankle holster, of course). Anything less would be absolutely ridiculous.

On a serious note... it's always sad when cops kill someone's pet, even when it's justified.

Not a question of what caliber. You need an "Anti-Primate Device"...

Years ago I read a study on the strength of chimps. One fully grown 200 pounder pulled the equivalent of a 1500 pound deadlift. I would not want one of those banana gobblers mad at me. And that does not mean I wouldn't kick his ass I am just saying it might take a minute or two longer.

It is sad for a cop to have to kill somebody's pet, even if it is a mercy killing of a dying animal.
Having to put down an animal because of a stupid owner is worst of all.

Imagine how the owner felt repeatedly stabbing a pet and longtime companion.

Might not ever know what caused the rampage or whether it could be prevented. At any rate it is a sad story.

It is a sad story, for sure.

I agree with Jeff Corwin, who was interviewed this morning. He stated that people have no business making a pet from a great ape (paraphrasing).

What caliber? Well, most that carry concealed already have an anti-primate weapon.
I vote for hot loaded 45 Colt (not SASS sissy rounds) in a SAA Colt.
Don't forget Eve Carson. or the goblins that killed her.

All right, I will get back in my cage.

Seriously though, it is sad and I hope the poor woman recovers and that they can fix her face. What a horrible tragedy...

I have a friend that used to work from the simian retrovirus lab at UC Davis, and he's personally seen a chimp break a coworkers arm by just grabing it. No yanking no wrenching, just a quick grab. I'd want an firehose and an auto shotgun...

"He bit both of her hands off and the cop told me he just kept eating her. It's terrible," Lynne Mecca, a friend of the victim, told CBS News.
Its going to be a long recovery if this account is true

    I thought of him also..

Perhaps the apes have heard he passed and are making another attempt to grab the brass ring. But really romma, yu could've used quotes.

I worked in a zoo in Fla a long, long time ago. One of the chimps there had bitten off two of the owners fingers one day (no apparant reason) spit them out and handed them back. Apes aren't evil animals but they ARE animals. As one person has already pointed of they are incredible strong. We had one baby chimp at the zoo maybe the size of a 2-year old that used to pick up an 18 pound bowling ball and HURL it at me everytime I walked by her cage. I haven't a clue why she singled me out but she did and I was very careful never to enter her enclosure.

Bottom line a 15 year old chimp should have been retired to a sanctuary long since.

Maybe not owner's fault but direct result of owner's stupid decision.

    Treo is sad now

.44Mag with 300gr hollow points, shouldn't take more than one.

A sad case of a sick and confused animal . Everyone ( including the cops here ) are going to be scarred one way or another for life . I once knew a fella who was a confirmed nazi , not the modern day nazi the old real ones , who flew at pretty close to the close of the war to argentina . He worked for a time for my uncle as a pilot as he had for some of the alphabet soup the US .gov can be . He was all over south america before he settled in Florida. One of the tails he told is about going monkey hunting , he said he did it once , and shot one , and never again . Appairently this fella had no problem shooting humans who needed it ( in his opinion ) , but had a great deal of problem with shooting an animal who " dammed straight bobby " mirrored human reaction when shot for no real reason other than someone liked the meat . Now this is a man who had no issue with hunting and in fact we " borrowed " my uncles helecopter to shoot coyotes and both had a wonderful time wile eradicating a pack that truly needed it .

My opinion is that i never want to shoot any primate , but if i have to shoot said chimp ( i have seen 170 thro 200 lbs ) i would think that about any caliber suataible for a large human on drugs would work . My issue come not from the physical , but from what oscar told me , the memory being just too close .
edited to add: if you want to keep a pet , choose a really small carnivore ( a cat or ferret will mark you up enough ) or choose a herbivore such as a calf . the size herbivores will make you get rid of them fast enough to keep you somewhat safe . Dont make choices that force others to take action to keep everyone safe , and kill an animal which otherwise might have lived on . Dammit folks they are not domesticated , i dont care how they were raised , the mauling of the canine breeds are hidden in the fog of history and breeding . a chimp , or a tiger , or whatever you desire does not have that .
