Ammo is so hard to find!

My usual source for range ammo is Wal*Mart. Their prices on Blazer Brass are cheaper even than internet prices (and then you pay shipping, too, on internet orders). When they have it, their prices on the Remington UMC 250-round packs are almost as cheap as the Blazer Brass.

Lately, the shelves have been stripped bare.

I did come across 4 boxes of Remington UMC 9mm yesterday, and took 'em.

If only I could find .38 spl -- I am nearly out of that.

Things weren't any better at Academy in Webster/ClearLake yesterday either.

No .223 or 7.62x39, only "premium" .308. They did have a Bushmaster AR for $1200.

I was at Cabelas in KCK last week. They had plenty of .223 in bulk but was out of 9mm. I didn't notice what they had in .38. Hopefully this too will pass.

A while back I encountered this at my neighborhood gun shop. I couldn't find what I was looking for, so I asked, "I'm looking for a sort of unusual old military caliber, it's called .223 rem, have you ever heard of it?"

Things have gotten a little better since, but selection is much more limited than it used to be.

There's been plenty of .22; the Remington Golden Bullet 550 packs are usually at my local Wal*Mart for (IIRC) $13.97.

I can only find good defensive ammo online -- For .38 spl, I can never find Buffalo Bore locally, only online. Golden Saber in .45 auto is hard to come by at a reasonable price except online, and the gun-buying and ammo-hoarding hysteria seems to have hit 9mm the hardest.

I just got 15 boxes of 12 ga 2 3/4" #00 buck from CheaperThanDirt -- buck of any variety is not available in stores locally.

The local indoor range (High Noon) is completely out of range reloads. First time I've seen that.

Even worse, there's no Unique to be had, nor CCI small pistol primers, so I can't even make my own! (Guess I'll have to switch brands....)

Local gun shop is spotty on odd-ball stuff and a little low on some items, but they seem to be able to provide something to shoot in the standard calibers. Stopped at Bass Pro Shop a couple days ago and they were pretty good on ammo as well.

I was in a shop today. They had cases of 223, 9mm and other stuff stacked on a palate on the floor and the shelves were pretty much full to overflowing with just about everything. The downside is that the prices are high from what I could see. For example, Federal Bulk pack 22 ammo =$25. Their handgun supply has been totally replenished since Christmas now. They may be thin on a few things, but not much of what they carry normally. Prices on guns are "average". I've bought serval firearms there in the last year.

Added: They also had 5 or 6 AR's on the shelf as well as a few Mini-14's. There was as many firearms, and they usually carry a bunch, as anytime I have visited the gun shop. I was actually kind of surprised as their inventory does not fit the panic mindset at all.

No bulk packs of 22 in Walmart here (Kansas) for over 2 months. Cabelas in Kansas City today seemed well stocked, though. UMC 223, 200 rounds $89.99. Fiocchi 223, 250 rounds $149.99. Federal bulk 22 in the 550 packs was $20.00.

BTW, Cabelas had 500 round tins of Russian 5.56 for $189...no manufact. name identified Anybody know if this is steel or bronze cased? (I assumed steel for that price)

    Fella's;

I bought one of the Ruger LCP's. Then I tried to find some .380ACP to stoke it with. None in town, G.F. Montana. That's just weird to me. I know the shop's don't normally stock huge supplies of it, but I also never thought there'd be a run on .380 in this town. Forty four magnum yes, mouse ammo, no.

Walmart Ammo was extremely scarce here in California for Dec/Jan but it is starting to come in on a more frequent basis now in small amounts. We still lots of ammo at regular gun stores and prices aren't too bad in some of them.

I went to the Cabelas in east Grand forks today as my home town stores, all 6 of them are out of 7.62x39, 9mm, 38 special and .380.

The cabelas had no 7.62x39 except for 10 boxes of some hunting loads and they couldn't order any more.

They had some bulk .223 but otherwise nothing but varmint loads on the shelves.

We cleaned them out of the last 800 rounds of .380 wolf and the last 600 rounds of 9mm hardball (mixed brands) that they had.

    Things are getting pretty thin.

WallyWorld by my house had 4 boxes of .40S&W, about 25 boxes of .45, a smattering (a few boxes) of a few various rifle calibers. Oh, and a little bit of .32 and .25. Not very much in shotgun shells, either.

The only thing my local wal-mart had was Blazer brass in .45 acp, everything else was sold out; it seems the wally world ammo shortage has hit east Texas as well.

My store has about 20 boxes of 40 S&W. 100 round boxes.

BTW...my store is in my closet.

Does this apply to handloading supplies, also?

If not, then time to get into it.

Sadly it applies to reloading supplies too. I can't get small pistol primers for love or money in my area right now.

Beware. I bought a couple of thousand rounds of surplus 9mm from R-guns, and in the first magazine of ammo, one bullet got stuck in the barrel. Fortunately the shooter (not me) was very experienced and stopped shooting in a rapid string when he realized that the sound wasn't right. I had to use a steel rod to pound the bullet down the barrel to get it out.

    Fella's;

Seriously, I don't think the situation is as bad with reloading supplies as it is with ammo. That's not to say that there aren't temporary shortages as noted above, but that's what they have always proven to be; temporary.

After looking at some of the reloading supply shortages around here, I came to the conclusion that although I might not be able to find exactly the component I wanted, there was usually something on the shelf that would do.

OK, ZeSpectre can't get small pistol primers. But the way that's stated, it implies that large pistol primers in some amount are available. What, no 1911 platform in .45ACP! Egad man, it's time to broaden your horizons.

Hmmm, it does seem to be a cogent argument against the one caliber school of thought too. Fortunately, I never went to that school.

In any case, I think that with some patience and planning ahead, most of the reloading supply problems are solvable.

Ha ha! My store is also very well stocked on .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .357 magnum. Only 1K rounds of .223 and they're running low on .45 Colt, but I hear there's a new shipment of 7.5x55 Swiss coming in next week!

LOL - it's funny that we have more ammo than the stores that sell ammo. I found a few boxes of .223 REM UMC at Farm & Fleet yesterday and bought two. That brings my round count for .223 up to about 1,400, and now over 1,000 rounds for each caliber.

Still really hard to find any 9mm in town.
