leupold not holding zero on mini-14 target...

i have a Leupold vx-iii and it is not holding zero on my Ruger mini-14 target
i am shocked and very disappointed at this. it used to hold zero up until last month. have no idea why its doing this....
i know Leupold are good and didnt think it would do this....
i didn't buy budget optics for it...

any advice on that one?? a buffer? could i make my own buffer out of medium to thick leather?? i heard those buffertech things are not so good....

    anyone else experience this?

Send it back to Leupold. Their customer service is very good.

Have you checked the mounts and rings?
    Otherwise, back to loopy.

Are you sure it's the scope and not the rifle ?

Mini-14's are not noted for shooting well.

    armabill

I'm inclined to think like armabill. Especially if it is an older series Mini. If this is a newer model Mini 14 ,which I have found to be Oh so much better than the older series, I'd still be inclined to to run this test. Before I packed it up for shipment to Leupold I would try that scope on a known tight shooting rifle. If it's still a problem Leupold will stand behind it.

no i was shooting not warm, but not after 5 warm up rounds....

my mini typically shoots around moa, every now and then it is around an inch and a half, and then just as often about 3/4 of an inch...

its the heavy barrel target model...

    its accurate....

but now that i think about it, i was working on it and took the Ruger rings off the receiver... put it back on.... so that might have done it. i forgot i did that.
but, i wouldn't think taking the Ruger rings off and putting them back on would throw it off by 4 or 5 inches. should it?

i have a red dot piggybacked on the scope and it stays zeroed... i don't know what the deal is...

    here is a picture

its just a stock rifle that i attached a Burris Fastfire to with a Sar ring from Tactical Night Vision....

but like i said, the Burris red dot stays zeroed, and the Leupold is shakes loose...
i think i need to do more testing to decide if it really is doing this... my post above this one explains what i mean....

it is absolutely fun to shoot... one of my favorite rifles, i just wish this wasn't happening... the only thing going wrong with it.

At 100 yds? With stock mount and rings? Yeah it could be off that much with a re mount, but you didn't move the red dot which is mounted on the scope right? And the red dot stays zeroed right? If the red dot stays set which is mounted on your scope but the scope doesn't I would suspect the scope, but you should really make sure of this before you send it back to leupy.

"...or is it spelled locktight..." Lock-tite actually.
"...Mini-14's are not noted for shooting well..." It's a Mini-14 Target. The few on-line reports I've seen indicate that Ruger can actually make a Mini that shoots. Over a grand for one though.
"...taking the Ruger rings off and putting them back on..." It can. If you take off the mounts(or the scope) and put 'em back on you have to sight in again.
"...red dot piggybacked on the scope..." Whatever for? That may be causing your problem.

i put the red dot on, for the fun of it.... just for the heck of it...
never thought that would cause the problem, i am taking it out this weekend again to finally test it out...
i have been so busy lately that i haven't had a chance to get to the range again.

i may have to take the red dot off....
i just had it and didnt have another gun to put it on, plus i wish the target mini had irons....
and no, i didnt pay a grand for it

by the way, the red dot is fun on there.... i
... it may not be optimal for a 15lbs rifle (fully loaded with a 30rnd mag)

i dont just use this as my range toy... but its my do it all gun, so not being limited by the scope is a plus.

    anyway, thanks for your input
