Potentially moving to CA, need advice on guns

Hypothetically speaking, if one were to take up residence in CA, one could take a large collection of handguns with them, could they not? And if those were all popular handguns not on the drop test list, they could be resold for significant profits to residents, could they not?

The problem is that most of the handguns worth bringing in are in extremely short supply right now (kel-tecs for example). Any ideas for a readily available handgun model that is not available in CA but could be brought in and resold?

Also, I have not studied CA gun law recently as I never intended to return to the ****hole, but I was wondering if anyone knows the CA rules (especially informal rules) for how many guns one can sell to private parties (legally, via FFL) before the CA DOJ starts getting antsy.

I'd forgotten. I lasted less than a minute at that link. What arrogance! What all-devouring statism! Stalin would be so proud of his spawn!

Best to find another location to move to, if you don't need to, don't do it.

Firearms Information for New California Residents - Handguns

Any person (fool) who moves into California and who brings any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person is considered to be a "Personal Handgun Importer" (aka Bad Guy) and is required to do one of the following within 60 days:

    * Complete and submit a NEW RESIDENT HANDGUN OWNERSHIP REPORT form along with $19.00 to the Department of Justice. A separate report form and $19.00 fee is required for each handgun reported.

    (not directed at you, Lawbot!)

You can sell as many as you like, the restriction is on the purchaser. Unfortunately, many dealers sort of make up their own rules. For example, selling private party to private party, the gun doesn't need to be on the "drop list", that requirement is for dealers selling new guns. However, recently a friend and I went to a local dealer to do the exchange and they got their panties in a twist because the gun wasn't on their list. When you try and explain it to them, they take a "holier than thou/ I know better since I'm the dealer" approach. Granted, a gun dealer in Cali has gotta be a special person to put up with everything, we just went to another dealer and made the exchange.

I guess the whole point to my ramblings is that just because its legal, if it looks hokey, the dealer may make up their own way of doing it or reject it alltogether.

I'll talk to my Amigo, he really knows the rules, off top of head, does not need to hit the books, does that all the time, everyday...

So it is right there, in memory bank...

You really need to know, the good, bad and ugly, if you are coming here, get rid of the "bad and ugly" before crossing the state line

I own property out of state and I'd be keeping all my NFA stuff there in a safe. Actually I'll be keeping all of my non-NFA stuff there as well since I own at most 3 weapons that aren't outright illegal in CA and one of those has >10 rd magazines.

I've frequently said that "they couldn't pay me enough to move back to CA." Turns out they can. I really hate the state (and this goes to many reasons that have nothing to do with guns) and I really wish significant portions of it would get nuked and slide into the pacific ocean, but money is money. Even after taxes, it seems worth it.

I have noticed that several of you have missed the point of this thread, which was to suggest handgun models that are known to not be on the drop list but people in CA wish they could get.

Be a cop. You can pretty much own whatever you want. Of course you may not want to be a cop. But they didn't ask you that.

I just left California in June, and the hot sellers seem to be XDM's because you cant get them, LCPs, LCRs, Kel Tec PF9's, and certain blends of M&P's, like the models with thumb safeties.

See whats new, and not on the cali list, and you can bet thats where the demand will be. Just remember to leave all your greater than 10 round magazines out of california, preferably with somebody in the panhandle of Florida, like the pensacola area
Difference between a Mall Ninja and a cop:

    Example:
-When a mall security guard refers to a shoplifter he'll use some official sounding word like "perpetrator" (e.g. I then pursued the perpetrator in a north by northwesterly direction.)

-When a cop refers to a shoplifter he'll use an industry term such as "that stupid bastard" (e.g. I had to chase that stupid bastard through the parking lot.)

    Not as I Recall

While LEO's have leeway in handguns that are purchased on letterhead, for duty use, they were still required to register personally owned "assault weapons" when the first ban went through. A peace officer may have an easier time getting licensed to sell NFA firearms but that's about it.

When the deputies I worked with found out I was moving to Arizona, in early 1999, a few approached me to inquire if they could buy safes and store firearms at my new home. I recall one deputy who had a falling out with his wife, who subsequently phoned the station commander. "Captain, did you know that my husband has an unregistered assault weapon?"

As long as we're listing credentials, the movers loaded up my household goods the day Gray Davis signed California's second Assault Weapon Control Act (July 20, 1999) and I drove out of the state the next day, pulling a trailer loaded with all my firearms, ammo and reloading components.

I may end up back there for various reasons.

Whats the penalty for failing to register your guns upon moving into the state? how often is such a penalty assessed?

...the penalty for failing to register handguns but, if you get popped carrying concealed without a permit (which, in California includes such things as having an unloaded handgun inside a glove compartment or under the seat of your vehicle), it's already a felony on the first offense if the handgun is not registered.

    I noticed that too. I’d like a S&W/Walther PPK/S in .32 please.

Moving right along with answers or not...

The problem you are going to have is an individual item, unique to you and what you have as shooters.

Contact DOJ and talk to a real person, IMHO

As far as what others want and don't have, are you looking to buy before entering state
    Don't do it

There are a number of States that I could never move to due to their ridiculous gun laws, CA is among them.

BTW, this is only a potential move to CA. There is a decent chance I may be able to avoid this move.
