The only way i'd support a ban on handguns is if law enforcement was personally responsible for my and my loved ones safety, and their failure to guarantee said safety was actionable.

How can it be actionable on your part if they fail? I know a lot of local cops, great people. But I like having my own gun thank you very much. And what about the broader aspects of the 2A?
I choose freedom.
With the frontiers opening up in Kentucky and Ohio in that time frame? Not to mention the fur trade?too many handguns get into the pipeline bought then sold/traded by buyers with no actual permanent residence - something our forefathers did not see in the future. just IMO.

I don't know what the answer is but I've seen some of these gang-bangers and 'undocumented aliens' driving around waveing pistols and I'm very doubtful that any of them have a 'permanent residence' or voter registration.
it's just downright scary to me and I'm a 'Nam vet and CCW.
maybe it's 'straw purchases' that they use to get these pistols?
and I'm against any waiting period for documented lawful citizens to buy themselves a firearm whether long gun or handgun.
I am amazed and appalled at the gutter-level that most of the "discussions" at that site have decended to.
It makes me appreciate the tenor of comments at THR even more.
Guns, if they have a moral dimension, are good. Without guns, the strong can always dominate the weak; the many can always dominate the few; and men can always dominate women. A gun gives each person an agency equivalent to his (or her) moral standing. In my humble opinion, those who teach correct and proper gun use are doing G-d's work.
FWIW we're spanking them at just about 20 to 1 now
Gangbangers and "undocumented aliens" (How does one tell they're undocumented at a glance?) can't legally buy guns now. So, given they aren't obeying current laws, how would your stricter laws help?I don't know what the answer is

Thank God it's not a close vote!
I'm against having to show documents of being a lawful citizen to purchase a firearm.I'm against any waiting period for documented lawful citizens to buy themselves a firearm whether long gun or handgun.
The laws on background checks, showing proper documents, residency requirements and the like have been shown to be ineffective in keeping the criminal element from arming themselves. Not only should we not be enacting stricter laws, we need to get rid of some of the laws we have. So, given they aren't obeying current laws, how would your stricter laws help?
I believe our forefathers expected us to follow the letter and the intent of the Constitution. I believe that they foresaw that the threat of government restriction of arms trade as a greater threat than any criminal element. I believe that they thought the right to arms should not be dependent on one's ability to maintain a permanent residence. Of course that IMHO. I believe that the forefathers wrote enough on the subject that it should not be difficult to determine what they were thinking.too many handguns get into the pipeline bought then sold/traded by buyers with no actual permanent residence - something our forefathers did not see in the future. just IMO.
We MUST check ID at airports so we can catch suicide bombers before they can re-offend!

Did you register?
Will you vote?
Will you take other like-minded voters to the polls?
Would you suport a ban on automobiles if if public transportation officials were personally responsible for my and my loved ones safety, and their failure to guarantee said transport was actionable?

Would you support a ban on handguns?

Still running 10 or 11 to 1.
Notice we have here the actual question people are responding to: "Would you support a ban on handguns?"
Now imagine answers to a gun prohibitionist poll worded "Would you support reasonable gun regulations tailored to prevent crime and promote safety?" reported as answers to the question "Would you support a ban on handguns?" I am not kidding, folks, there are polls where the questions or lead-in to the questions are not what is reported in the news releases.
I answered this poll because the question asked is the question reported. I also commented:
A couple of Knoxville policemen told the newspaper recently that maybe one in five criminals might own a gun, which contrasts with 40% or more of households owning guns. Personally, I suspect that what deters the majority of criminals from having guns is that "gun crime" (such as possession/use in furtherance of a criminal enterprise) "means hard time" to quite the ads run by the DAs office.Tennessee state constitution Article I Section 26 protects the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms, reserving the authority to regulate arms with a view to prevent crime. Court rulings and attorney general opinions state that regulation cannot unduly restrict the lawful traditional ownership and use of arms. Tennessee at one time in the late 1950s actually considered and rejected at handgun ban. Tennessee has experimented with carry permit at discretion of sheriff, fifteen day waiting period on permit to purchase, etc. and abandoned gun policies that don't impact crime but unduly restrict the citizens RKBA. We currently have "shall issue" carry permit (administered like drivers' license) and an instant check system with the TBI for store purchases.
That said, I have known as friends, neighbors and relatives law enforcement and criminals both. They have told me consistently (a) most criminals don't own guns and (b) those who do own them get them illegally in spite of any gun laws.

Yes!You do understand that the thread and poll are over 1 year old, right?
And another 10,000 plus have voted against wanting a handgun ban since the the last post which I feel is worth while to report.

Yes I am surprised the poll is still open. I am not surprised a dead thread has been resurrected, because:
http://www.gallup.com/poll/150341/re...ndgun-ban.aspx
October 26, 2011
Gallup Poll: "Record-Low 26% in U.S. Favor Handgun Ban:
Support for stricter gun laws in general is lowest Gallup has measured",
60% in favor of banning handguns in 1959, dropped below 50% by 1965, reached 26% in 2011.
Guess, what? It's still relevant! Take that, Coalition to Ban Handguns!

Hi buckfynn,
First off, welcome to the board.
Second, pay no attention to those that cry 'zombie thread.' The point was valid a year ago and it's just as valid now.
