The DD load is heavier than buckshot which means that each DD weighs more than the 70 grain weight of a '000' pellet, the PDX-1 is rated at 750fps from a handgun barrel but that should be brought up a bit in a long gun (.410 levergun, pump, revolving carbine, ect) I would guess that it should reach at least 850 -1000 fps (again just a guess at this point)

Discs? Interesting. If I still had access to a milling machine it might be fun to build a mold that casts a .32-.38 ball centered within a .41 disc between 1/8 to a 1/4 inch th . (Think ancient movie flying saucer or the planet Saturn) Two or three in a .410 shell would be an interesting experiment.

Here is a site for .410 fans to get an idea of what the little scatter gun shells do.

It seems like the .410 defensive pump action is catching on...here is a vid from my friend and fellow youtube poster KingD3001 showing off the DFG Mk-2 he put together.

And this one is from another poster on youtube named Dritchie40

Now that I have two pump action shotguns,I've been thinking about another action type.

Maybe a pair of H&R Single shot .410's,thinking about picking up two examples of the 26 inch barreled variety, have the barrels trimmed and squared up,with the beads re-set.

What has me thinking about the break action is the fact that they are stong actions, and have less moving parts to worry about than a pump or autoloader.

They should do rather well for load testing.

Something I noticed with the PDX-1 .410 load is that it has a much stouter recoil than slugs or buckshot.

The stronger recoil could lead to problems on down the line for a pump action or autoloader, and shouldn't really effect a stronger action like that found with the single shot guns.

In a lot of cases it's like fighting an uphill battle trying to get people to understand the usefulness of a .410 defensive shotgun...

All I keep getting hit with is that "The .410 is too weak to do anything but make somebody mad" or "You're an {Insert insult to my manhood here} Man up and use something bigger"

It's like I'm being followed around by the same bunch of troll posting idiots (I haven't gotten that here, which is why I stick around this site, folks are more understanding on this forum)

I now know how Eugene Stoner felt with the 5.56 cartridge and all the flak he caught.

    Hi Fletch,

Some are just built to argue, it's the nature of mankind in general and men in particular. For the moment, let's recap...

The .410 is the smallest shotgun but far from the smallest firearm. The .410 requires a more skilled shooter than the 12 guage. But that is offset by the weapon being more user friendly in both balance and recoil. Another positive often overlooked is that it doesn't share the uberweapon myth with it's 12 guage big brother. Since the idea that "just racking the slide" is enough to send an aggressor running into the night in abject fear is not present the operator must clear his mind and form a reasonable plan of attack.

In the end, the only weapon any possess is the few cubic millimeters inside their skulls. It is generally agreed that the .380 is woefully underpowered for serious self defense. Yet in Florida a feeble 71 year old man with the heart of a warrior used one to send two much younger men to flight. I'm told, often and vehemently that my great grandfather's old 32-20 carbine would be worthless in a do or die situation. But in my brother's "startled shot" games, I hit a swinging golf ball 4 rounds out of 5. Scared enough to pee my pants I could probably hit my target every other round. Nine hits out of nineteen may not stop a determined attacker but I'll bet my children's lives and my own that it will cause the less dedicated to rethink his plans.

Bottom line goes back to teachings of a couple of ignorant dirt farmers... It ain't the machine, it's the operator!

True but trying to get others to understand such is akin to pulling hens teeth.

I will continue to try my best to get others to understand that it isn't as much the weapon as the person behind it.

I am by no means an expert but I am a good enough shot to do what is needed (think about a small fast moving target that is zig zagging through a tree top).

I think it may help if you stop comparing it to a 12 gauge and start comparing it to a handgun. In those terms, each pull of the trigger delivers multiple projectiles of about the same weight and diameter of a .380.
The Remington 2 1/2 inch .410 HD load, has four 000 buck pellets at a reported 1300 fps, which puts the velocity up into the 9mm +P range. Granted, the individual pellets are going to be less effective than a 9mm +P hollowpoint, but... you get 4 with each of pull of the trigger and you get to deliver them from a shoulder mounted weapon with minimal recoil and minimal muzzle flash.

The reason I compare it to the 12 guage is because it is lighter in weapon and ammo weight, and as far as pellet velocity they are pushing them out at about the same rate of speed.

The handgun argument has been made but then the pistol caliber carbine or AR-15 is brought up.

Even though neither can match the rate of fire of a shotgun (unless we are talking full auto) with a single trigger pull.

I have even mentioned the higher hit probablility of the shotgun.

It seems folks are just dead set against the .410 as anything but a laughing stock.

But I'll keep going against the grain.

First Rule of a Gun fight is to have a gun, any gun.
Secondr Rule is to use the biggest one that you can effective control and fire.
    Third Rule, see rule one

No argument from me if that is your choice. The .410 has seen better HD ammo since the Taurus Judge came out. I'm thinking of getting some Winchester PDX1 for my NEF single shot when out hunting/camping. Wouldn't make it a death ray but will tip the odds a bit more in my favor.

By the way the smallest shotguns that can still be had on the used gun market is Marlins 25M bolt action smoothbore .22 WMR designed for protecting the garden.

True the garden gun is a smoothbore, and is meant to be used with shot cartridges.

I thought that Marlin discontinued those a few years ago.

But anyway I'm talking about the .410,not a rimfire that is meant to be used for small garden pests (I wouldn't mind picking up one though just for fun and rat removal,so I'll just stick with the "for fun reason")

I thought about the Remington 572 smoothbore but I couldn't find any around.

I have 12, 20, and .410 the .410 is on duty. I like it and I'm good with it. I learned how to wing shoot with a .410 with a turned barrel (the bead was shifted to the right). The .410 has always been a favorite, it can take snakes, swamp rats, bird, rabbit, and deer. It may not be the most powerful but it gets the job done. I also have lg and sm bore pistols, I prefer my .380 for conceal carry.

Well it looks like Savage is getting back into the .22/410 combo gun market....and I think I might pick one up for a B-Day gift for myself this year...

It also seems that Mr. Quinn understands the usefulness of a .410 shotgun barrel without a choke.

I knew I liked his reviews for some reason.

Mossberg just messed up by dropping the 50455 from their line up,they did continue the HS410.

Which is fine if you like a shotgun that has a less effective range than an airsoft gun.

I just order mine through Mossberg but it helps to know the model number and purpose in mind for the scattergun.

What I meant is that the HS410 with it's "spreader choke" isn't any good for longer range use and the patterns are wide enough to throw cats through.

The HS410 would be better served by an 18.5 inch cylinder choke barrel like the one found on the .410 cruiser.

Nothing against those that own the HS410,I just hate that model because of the wasted potential.
