    .22 Pistols...

In everybody's own opinion which one is the best .22 auto loading pistol of all time?

For me it's the Ruger MK 3 series, the standard models have always been an eye catcher, and the magazine release is where I think it should have always been, the other features aren't needed but it doesn't take away the "want" factor in my opinion.

Feel free to list your favorite.

When you say pistol and 22lr in the same breath I hear High Standard made in Hamden CT.
    S&W 41 or the revolver 17.

For me, a .22 is a trainer as much as a recreational pistol.

For that reason, I'd reject the Mark III because the grip angle and controls make it so different from the standard defense pistols.

I'd go with the Ruger 22/45 or the Browning Buckmark which were both designed to mimic centerfire defense pistols. Of those two, I prefer the Buckmark mostly because you can get a match trigger just by flipping the hammer spring.

Colt Woodsman, just about wore one out growing up.

Well that and a H&R 9 shot DA revolver.

If you want a serious opinion, here you go, but you probably won't like it.

No Mk. III Ruger will EVER be the best. Un-needed mag disconnect and un-needed key lock system.

The top of the heap is the Ruger Mk. II .22/45.

As far as Revolvers go The 617 is as accurate as you can find, just like the Model 17 that started it all.

I was just trying to keep this strictly auto loaders but I don't see why both can't be talked about.

There are too many great .22 pistols out there for me to choose just one.

I often recommend the Ruger to my beginning students based on its reliability, accuracy and reasonable price.

That said, my shooting .22 pistol is a High Standard Supermatic Trophy that I bought back in the 1970's .

The Colt Woodsman Match Target Series 2 gets my vote for best semi-auto .22.

The High Standard Victor Runs a close second.

I just purchased a Ruger MK III 22/45 Target stainless. I haven't fired it enough to really form an opinion about it one way or another.

I love my Mark II. But I wish I had a K-22 to go with it.

I like the Mk II, the Buckmark and the S&W 41 but right now the .22 pistol that I am having the most fun with is my SIG 1911-22 (GSG). This is a blast to shoot and pretty accurate too. I realize that it will not have the durability of the Ruger MK's or the Browning Buck Marks but who cares.

I haven't had this much fun with a .22 pistol in a long time. It has performed flawlessly right from the beginning, and everyone who shoots it seems to enjoy it. It really likes CC MiniMags but is reasonably accurate with most cheap plinking ammo.

I just bought a Ruger MK II in Stainless. It was part of an estate sale, and I always heard the MK II was superior to the MK III. Mine was made in 1985, by the serial #. I don't mind the Euro mag release, since I have several others with that too. I actually prefer it to the button, since my thumb never seems natural on the button, so it's a two handed affair anyway.
I didn't know about the 22/45 when I bought this one, but I don't think the 22/45 is available in stainless, and that was a plus for me.
If I had my choice, I'd get a MK II Target, with the slab barrel, the wood grip with the thumb rest, and adjustable sights.
Mine is a fun shooter, though, and will help me practice gun control while being cheap to shoot. The grip angle doesn't seem unnatural to me, maybe I'm too easy.

The cool setup, though is the 22/45 with a threaded barrel and a Yankee Hill suppressor. Probably not one in my future, but it would be way cool!.

    Question:
What is the difference between the MK II mag having the silver logo on the base and the mag with the red logo?
Both seem to work fine. Is it the mag disconnect?

The MK II does not have a mag disconnect. The magazine release for the Mark II is in the heel of the butt so it would not have the retaining notch required of the Mk III magazine.

The Mark III has the more familiar push-button mag release behind the trigger guard and it also has a magazine disconnect. The Mark III also has a loaded chamber indicator which most of us feel is unnecessary. While the mag release is a good feature, the mag disconnect and the LCI are what turn many people off from the Mark III

Colt Woodsman, bar none. Mine was made in 1938 and is still killing squirrels and rabbits.

.22s have different purposes. For match work, I have always liked:

Its status as an "assualt weapon" really helped its caché, too!

There are a TON of outstanding .22 pistols

At my house there is a Ruger, 2 buckmarks and a Smith 41.

    Ruger- jam-o-matic. Stamped frame, accurate
    Buckmark- fun, cheap, mega-accurate
41- the ferrari of the group. Slick as goose squeeze, a little tempermental. a sniper pistol with the long barrel.

More often than not I grab one of the buckmarks

(tip, use thread blocker on the take-down hex screws)

Of course wheelguns are cherished here and the K-22 is an amazing machine...so a lot of times the wheelie wins

I love my 41 and would never give it up but if I ever got a chance to get my hands wrapped around the grip of a Feinwerkbau AW93-L or Hämmerli 208s it would be awful hard to let go. In the meantime instead of a Ferrari I will settle for my Cadillac class S&W M41 as being a top gun because it is both top notch, accurate and more available.

Actually I did have my hands on a Hammerli, it wasn't the 208S but the owner was beginning to fret about his chances of me letting go so he could lock it up again.

I'll have to plead ignorant on "all time."

But I'm VERY happy with my Ruger 22/45 MkIII. A buddy has a Buckmark that he's equally pleased with. And they're both fine little handguns. Fact is, we could swap and probably be just as happy.

I'd say the two best of all time would be a contest between the S&W Model 41 and the Colt Woodsman -- I prefer the Woodsman.

How do the Soviet Margolin pistols compare to Woodman's and Ruger's?

My late husband swore by the S&W Model 41 that I bought for him one Christmas. It was a sweet pistol! It was like night and day compared to the S&W Model 22A that I shot on and off with him. He and I had NO complaints about the 22A but the Model 41 was a cream puff!

Up at Camp Perry, a lot of people compete with the Model 41.

He liked the Ruger Mark something - the first model?

My husband loves his Colt Woodsman from the early 1930's.

I prefer the Ruger Super single six - convertible 22lr/22wmr for a handgun. I like that s/a revolver more than ANY semi automatic 22lr pistol.

I'd have to call it a tie between the Colt Woodsman and the High Standards. I had a Ruger MK something or other, but didn't actually care for it much.
