    I joined the C&R club with a Mosin-Nagant 9-=30

first 3 shots out of a 91/30 and I didn't know what to expect. Sights as low as they could go with a 14 mph wind and I was a bit high.

My brother tried his luck with the next 3 shots, not bad considering he just had eye surgery and his bi-focals gave him a harder time then my glasses did.

The next 3 shots were at 2 liter bottles full of ice at the same distance and made both of us very happy. Our egos needed stroking after those two targets considering how we usually shoot. Now the gun needs to be cleaned, sights painted some nice pretty easy to see fluorescent color and we try again at 100 yards. My gosh those are some tiny sights.

Forgive the typo in the heading, I didn't see it till I posted and I can't correct it.

Yup....@ "lowest the rear sight can go" is sighted in a 300 meters by the Russians.....so most folks tell me.....and a few Internet Experts so it must be true huh? so most Mosins shoot high....lots of "Shadetree fixes" for raising the front sight picture. Heck if you cant hit what your shooting at the muzzle blast will knock it over anyway

The sight leaf has numbers on it, the lowest number will correspond with the lowest setting.

That MAY or MAY NOT be the battlesight setting, it is NOT on the SKS or the AK.

I would have to go dig out a M-N M91/30 to know for sure on it.

Generally, you just hold on the solar plexus out to the minimum distance listed on the sight and you will get a hit center of mass.

These old rifles are pretty amazing, especially with any old surplus ammo made any any of a dozen countries to some kind of standards by workers that may or may not have been sober on any given production day.

Two things, first these were the first shots fired out of it by me so I had no idea where the group was going to be I just wanted to see a group, adjustments can and will be made. Second fact is the gun is set up for 147 gr bullets not 200 grain but this was all I could get on short notice.

From my reading on the Mosin-Nagant apparently the lowest setting is for 100 meters and battle zero is 300 meters. (old Russian it would have been approximately150 arshin and 450 arshin) 100 meters = 140.6 arshin.

All I can say is that when I go out for 100 meter shooting Saturday my glasses had better be clean because that tiny notch is very hard for old fossilized eyes to find.

I had heard that the bark was big and the shoulder bite was substantial but now I wonder if that was coming from people used to the mouse gun and not real rifles. Or it might have been reported by people shooting the carbine version. My brother and I both feel it was about equivalent to a 30-30 and since he likes his K-31 7.5X55 and I like my H&R .308 and my M1 Garands this gun seemed pretty mild to us.

Maybe it was the ammo I was using, I haven't fired any milsurp in it yet. If it has more bang for the buck that may account for the differences in my experience and the reports I was reading. Anyway follow up report will be made when I get done with 100 meters.

Did you try shooting it with the pig sticker mounted on it? Several of mine shoot better that way.
And remember that there was no sheath for that cruciform gut puncher, it was ment to be mounted on the rifle at all times.

It must be too many .223 shooters firing their first real rifle. The MN shoots a round equivalent to a .308 out of a 9 pound rifle, so I can't imagine why people think it kicks hard...

    Hello,

    Google Alerts brought me here.

Figure I'll throw a plug out and wade around to see what else of interest is here. Wasn't aware of this board until now!

This seems to be my flagship product, the one folks like the most:

If nothing else, I have a ton of free stuff, vids, how-to articles, etc. I need to get a how-to up about making the trigger into a roller-bearing type. It definitely beats out all other milsurps when the trigger pins (ala M39) can roll!

    Hello OG,

I have been working on one, but nothing seems to be entirely satisfactory.

It either looks good, or works, but I've not found one that makes me happy enough to put it up for sale yet.

One thing I have been doing is working on enhancing the rear U notch, and playing with different shapes. For example, I sold this prototype

a while back. Don't see myself making another -- it was all-day work with fine files, magnifying equipment, and a camera with Macro abilities.

What I have been doing is smoothing out and deepening the rear notches. This gives a most satisfactory sight picture, but I still haven't put them up on the website yet. The front sights keep me busy enough!

    Regards,

    Josh
