I'm a lot older today and my regular load is 4.6 for target practicing. This was ACP and God looks out for idiots because there were no pressure signs everything worked well and you saw the results on the target. I don;t recommend it but that was the last of it and their ain't gonna be no more like that. That was made up before I started collecting reloading manuals on the advice of the guy I bought the dies bullets and powder from. His main business was a pool hall and bar so that might have been a clue. Now you know why I tell everybody who asks to get at least one, (preferably more), manual from a powder manufacturer, a bullet manufacturer and a reloading equipment manufacturer and read them before you buy one single item.

So where are the shooters, doesn't anybody have a carry gun they are willing to shoot. Challenge match is still on, any caliber gun as long as it starts with a 2, 3, or 4 and is carried in a holster. Hunting or SD makes no difference.

Here is the target to print out in case you forgot.

Copy it to MS Paint, select all, reduce the size then save it under a diff file name.

If you have MS office use picture manager to reduce the size. That software tends not to be as "lossy."

    Shooting yesterday

    Thanks, Selena, for the tips.

Great afternoon shooting, my daughter and her fiance are visiting and we unlimbered all the 22s for the afternoon. She prefers my Remington 12A with a red dot scope. He enjoyed everything but the little pump was his favorite too.

We all put a couple mags through the pictured Mark II. The target shown was my last shooting of the afternoon.

No holster, as per earlier post, I mexican carry this gun in the woods during deer season, in case I see some squirrels, and sometimes in town. I am going to get a Simply Rugged Cuda for it but I am not allowed by SWMBO to do personal shopping the month before my birthday. So maybe I'll get it this week, or else I'll order it then.

Not great shooting, I pulled a couple low left, but I feel basically OK about it.

Both guns are RIA, both are essentially stock and unmodified other than adding slimline alumagrips

First target, RIA semi-custom, CS/Officer lower, MS upper (4" bushingless bull barrel) - making an "almost CCO" gun.
Not too hot for score, 15yards seemed awfully far away yesterday.
    Score = (1 x 10) + (9 x 3) + (8 x 4) + 1x-1) = 68
The outermost shot at 7 o'clock might be touching, and the two shots at 7 o'clock in the "9" ring might be touching the "10" ring ... but obviously I wasn't "in the zone" at this moment. Decent for defensive shooting, lousy for target shooting.
which way do I adjust the sights to move shots closer to the center?
I'm still getting used to the large blocky Trijicon sights, and I do think my hand would be a bit more comfortable with the longer trigger, I'll probably try a swap next time I'm doing a detail strip of these two frames and see if it helps.

Second target, RIA XT22, first time it went to the range, I warmed the gun up and made sure it functioned with 100 rounds of casual shooting, then shot other stuff for a while, then came back to the XT22.
    Score = (4 x 10) + (4 x 9) + (2 x 8) = 92

Next time out - 9x19 and .32acp, I know both start with a "3" but I want to see what I can do with the Kel-Tec P32, and my Walther PPS-9 hasn't even been shot since February - maybe next month we can have...

Glad to see targets coming in, only a few days for April and then we get to start fresh with the May challenge.

The targets above are my brothers, he hasn't shot for nearly 3 years but he was at my house this weekend and I made him shoot the challenge match with his guns. He is a long haul trucker with very few days home so he has me store his guns for him. I try to make sure he gets at least a little workout the rare times he does show up.

Week to go for Carry Challenge targets

    My targets for May:

What I shot at, 3 targets on a box at 15 yards with 2 gallon jugs to hold it in place because of the high winds:

And last but not least the 3 guns used, H&R 922 for the 2 category, Ruger P94 9MM for the 3 category and ;last but not least the old Ruger Super Blackhawk my backup deer gun in 44 mag. I am almost out of those 180 gr rounds and I am glad, those are nasty on my hand and bother the neighbors horses. I much prefer the 240 and 300 grain rounds.

If you forgot the rules they are on the first post of the thread, to summarize, 10 shots with a handgun caliber starting with a 2 or 3 or 4. 15 yards and it must be a gun you have a holster for to carry the gun with. No warm up shots, no sighters, just stick the target up at 15 yards, shoot it and post it. Lets see what you can do with your carry gun if you ever need to use it.

Pretty fair shooting with the Rugers, Grump. Here's mine:
    targets 5-28-12 resized.jpg

Shot an 88, not great but good enough to best my son who holds an expert qualification with his M9. He was home on leave and shooting with me yesterday.

Either he was having an off day, or the old man still has it. I'm saying the latter and sticking to my story.

Not bad yourself. Once a shooter you might lose a step and a point but always a shooter. Go ahead and rub it into the kid, it will make him work harder to beat you and when he does you will be as proud of his shooting as if it were your own target.

The Ruger P94 is the hardest for me to shoot consistently because of the long creepy take up on the trigger. Doesn't take much to break the shot but that take up kills me. Any other ammo other than that 147 gr and the score would have been a lot lower.

July. time for shooters to step up and post their targets.

Old Grumps Carry Gun Challenge Match is still on. I was out of it last month with moms funeral and other complications but its still on. Read first post if you don't know how to score this target, rules are simple, any gun you carry in a holster whose caliber starts with a 2 or 3 or 4 qualifies for the match. Print out the target, set it up at 15 yards, draw your gun and shoot at it 10 times. No warm up targets, no sighters. This is just like if you were in the woods or a back alley faced with something that wanted to hurt you and you had to draw your gun and shoot. What you got is it.

Here are my targets shot 7/10/12 rapid fire from a true Weaver stance. It was a bit warm and the sun was bright so I had to shoot with my sun glasses on, I'm not used to that. Considering this months targets I should reconsider and shoot all my targets with sunglasses on.

Just letting you know I may miss July. I am moving and have packed a lot. If I don't get it in this weekend I just won't make it.

Good news is I'll be closer to a full-size range and can break in to the centerfires!

Understood, June was a lost month for me but I'm trying to make up for lost time. Now we need 30 or 40 other people with guns and holsters to get out there and shoot. Who knows it might get fun again for them. Nothing like getting some trigger time to make us realize how important it is that we keep fighting for our rights to shoot.

Targets printed - might get a change on Monday

Now to pick guns, maybe I'll take an all-Armscor 1911 group again:
    2 - RIA XT22 (.22lr)
3 - RIA TCM (configured as 9x19 rather than .22tcm)
    4 - Citadel CS (45acp)

Then I can use the same holster for everything!

I've been concentrating on rifle work, need to get back to basics with sidearms. I've got targets printed, will get out as soon as possible.

Time for August targets to start coming in. Only 3 weeks left and then we will start looking at the Fall hunting season getting in the way.

For my '2' caliber gun I shot my new to me 1980 model Single Six with the magnum cylinder installed. Only the second time I shot this gun but I am beginning to get real fond of it. Shooting CCI WMR Maxi Mags. Score was 90

Next up for the '3' caliber was my old Dan Wesson shooting 38 spcl 130 gr FMJ target ammo. Score was 97

Last but not least for my monster '4' caliber I unleashed the 41 Magnum S&W model 58 with the fixed sights. Shooting Remington 210 gr JSP. Score was 79.

Remember the rulers are simple, 10 rounds on this target at 15 yards with any handgun you carry in a holster. The caliber of the gun must start with a 2, 3 or 4. 10MM would be a '4', 9MM would be a '3', 5.7MM would be a '2'.

Not part of the challenge match obviously but just for giggles I took my 41 mag out to the 100 yard range and finished shooting up that particular box of ammo. I once again found that my elevation is spot on at 100 yards instead of shooting low however it still shoots right and with fixed sights the best I can do is hold about 8" left of the target in order to hit the target. This makes for a much larger group than I can shoot with my 44 mag and my 45 ACP but still close enough for a 100 yard deer gun. Little hard on old arthritic hands and wrists but I managed to hang on. These were my last 5 shots and my best 5 shots. I looked at my old targets and realized I hadn't shot this gun this much or at this range for 3 years so it was about time.

    Old Grumps Carry Gun Challenge

Bet you thought I went away and forgot about this didn't you. No such luck, the September challenge match is on for any carry gun, (ie. you carry it in a holster for SD, plinking, hunting or competition).

Rules are still simple, 15 yards from the target, draw from your holster and shoot 10 times at the target. No warm up targets, no sighting shots, this is the gun that you would be using and in an emergency you won't be given no sighters. Caliber has to start with a 2 or a 3 or a 4 so you have to convert your metrics to English. Target and scoring the target are in post 1. If the lead line of your bullet hole touches the next highest number that is the score. A miss out of the scoring ring is still a -1.

Here are my late morning early afternoon efforts today. Come on shooters, I didn't do so good with some of my guns, somebody can beat these. Even if you cannot post them anyway so we know you are shooting.

I have to admit that little target at 15 yards does look like its a long ways down there, that's why I spend most of my time at 25, 50 and 100 yards, it makes those close up and personal targets seem bigger. Well sort of bigger, looks like I might need a little more practice at 15 yards.

I didn't forget -- but I moved away from my backyard range. I just located the application for the local gun club. So, give me a few weeks....

I would accept your challenge, but unfortunately my last trip to the range will likely be my last for about 7 months. I'll be on a...um...business trip. With the Marines. Remind me to take you up on it when I return.

Been playing RO more than shooting for practice ... I DID do ok at a bowling pin match with carry guns, though. And I intend to repeat that tonight, scratched cornea and all.

Competitive times with carry-size guns up against purpose-built raceguns ... that has to be worth something.

Keep your head low and your butt lower and come back with your watertight integrity intact. 2 of my little marine cousin's purple heart awards came from butt wounds and only one from a shoulder wound. You would think a scrawny little 5'6" marine wouldn't stick up in the air that far.

The rest of you get to shooting. Need targets not excuses. You gonna let an old codger on crutches show you up? Goodness gracious, the very idea is preposterous.
