Although there is no single indicator that tracks the number of firearms sold in the country, the FBI reported that a record 14.4 million criminal background checks were requested for gun purchases in 2010, and that preliminary numbers project the figure to be above 16 million for 2011.

According to the NSSF's numbers, requests for gun-related background checks was up some 17.3 percent for the month of January 2012 compared to the same period a year earlier — the 20th straight monthly increase in background check requests.

It was my impression that was not for town residents, but primarily for cowboys come to town to whoop it up -- parallel to "no guns in bars" rules. Am I wrong?

I hate seeing such defeatism. You might want to rethink your position. This attitude is no help, where liberty is concerned.

I fear that the only message being sent is that gun owners are a Nervous Nellie bunch who panic buy guns based upon conjecture and rumors, not based upon fact.

You are right about that. Ruger is laughing all the way to the bank over the "panic".The stupidity is difficult to bear at times.

Ruger's stock is soaring. I missed again.

This is a good time. Most of the firearms companies have gone bankrupt or nearly so, one time or another.

As we speak, big green and it's sister companies are held by private capital, and are in sound financial state, probably to be spun off publicly at some time or another. Ruger is healthy and independent, so is SWHC.

Don't know much about Colt's or Winchester's ownership, but they seem to be doing well. Mossberg and Savage are healthy. Let's not leave out Charter Arms, they make a good product. Taurus has a very broad product line, and a mixed reputation -- but some of the mix is good.

Because of the bad economy there's more crime and people's only way to arm themselves is through guns. I think this is one reason why the gun industry have been very profitable for couple of years.

Actually violent crime has declined nationally since Obama has taken office. See the FBI stats since 2008.
