'Guns At GOP Convention? Bring 'Em On!'

Fred Grimm of The Miami Herald is in a twaddle again about those evil weapons. The Florida Governor,Rick Scott, and the devilish NRA just refuse to see things his way.

The good news is that without Fred on Staff, The Herald would have no comic relief. Common sense and the 2A just can't get through to the constantly, agitated, aging Mountaineer.
The headline is on the top of Fred's column in the paper edition. You know, the thing that you can actually hold in your paws.Somebody on the 'net site changed it. For better or worse.

Mindful of the “potentially contentious environment” that comes with so many overwrought protesters converging on a national political convention, the city of Tampa has banned a number of items the last four days of August.

Don’t come messing around the Republican National Convention with an “air rifle, air pistol, paintball rifle, explosive blasting cap, switchblade, hatchet, ax, slingshot, blackjack, metal knuckles, nunchakus, mace, iron buckle, ax handle, chain, crowbar, hammer, shovel or any club or bludgeon.”

All this along with “any other instrumentality used or intended to be used to cause physical or personal damage.”

Except, of course, for the most obvious instrument intended to cause physical or personal damage.

The city didn’t prohibit guns. It can’t.

Gov. Rick Scott, who could, won’t. He rejected a request from Mayor Bob Buckhorn asking for an “executive order prohibiting the transportation of firearms in Downtown Tampa.”

Scott’s answered arrived Wednesday. “Like you,” the governor stated, “I share the concern that ‘violent anti-government protests or other civil unrest’ can post ‘dangers’ and the ‘threat of substantial injury or harm to Florida residents and visitors to the state.’ But it is unclear how disarming law abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law.”

That is about the best answer I can ever remember a politician voice about what,'shall not be infringed', is all about.

I only hope we Floridians retain Governor Scott for a second term. He has had many difficult choices to make in every conceivable arena. As a result, his popularity has diminished.

If total government control equals safety, why are prisons so dangerous?

I've never been huge on Gov. Scott, but my goodness, this was quite forthright. The governor of my own Commonwealth, much talked about as a Vice-Presidential candidate, would never utter such words. God bless Gov. Scott!

He may be too smart. Or too honest.
Guns, if they have a moral dimension, are good. Without guns, the strong can always dominate the weak; the many can always dominate the few; and men can always dominate women. A gun gives each person an agency equivalent to his (or her) moral standing. In my humble opinion, those who teach correct and proper gun use are doing G-d's work.

My first job was a Miami Herald paper route in 1967 or 68. I apologize for spreading the manure. Of course, I assume no responsibility for whether readers in Miami chose to consume the manure or use it as compost.
