Army veteran kills himself with his own carry gun, not on purpose.

    http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2012/05/08/h...agedy-at-home/

“He was getting into a pickup he went to move the gun over in the seat and it misfired struck him in the head and killed him instantly,” says Trammel.
Misfired? Is that the right word?

    It fired. Why?

Unless someone actually saw it happen, I find the story to be a little suspect.

    I concur.
This sounds fishy to me, and I've seen some pretty weird stuff in my career.

The soldier was out with some friends in San Marcos
No detail. Were they drinking, sober, high?

According to Police Commander Penny Dunn, Timms carried a handgun with him to the downtown area when he went out with friends. The gun was left in a pickup truck.
Timms returned with two companions to the truck and got into the back seat. The preliminary investigation indicates that Timms was holding the weapon when it discharged, striking him in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Seems to me: they were drunk. Why else would have they left a gun in the truck? Perhaps they've gone to a club where you can't carry.

Anyway.. seems really weird. To get killed like that, you must pick up the weapon in a way that the muzzle points at you... which is definitely not something anyone with half a brain would do, especially if the gun has a round chambered.

One way or another the trigger had to be actuated. If it was a 1911, it had to be in gripped someone's hand, too.

If it were an accident... I'd bet it was a Glock or some similar gun-like object. (GLO ?)

He tried to pick it up, his finger got into the trigger guard and pressed against the trigger. Boom.

The alternative, that he left a loaded and cocked gun unsafed is just too scary to contemplate.

Not necessarily. Bad trigger jobs can make guns fire if dropped.

Not if it has a firing pin or hammer block! It would depend upon the age and model.

There's more to this than what meets the eye. I've seen some crappy gun handling from all 4 branches. I've also, in worse times than now had the stupid idea to mix handling guns and alcohol. Never once though, have I put my booger hook on the boom switch with the gun pointed ay people, let alone myself. There is more to the story no matter how you've looked at it.

Yep. There are some details missing - probably self-incriminating ones...

Many people - especially in media - assume that military service = good gun handling habits and skills. Big assumption - and wrong.

One of the most common problems - especially with veterans returning from deployments - is mixing alcohol or other drugs and guns. Somehow good things never seem to happen when intoxication meets a firearm.

Dude, you never had to pull 72 hours of watch in an active combat zone, have you? Caffeine and adrenalin are all that keep you going. Which is why we train the way we do, so that tired, hungry, sleep deprived you can do the job.

now the shakes when it's all over, well I won't comment on that.

Maybe the guy suffered from PTSD and killed himself. Possibly his friends and family didnt want him to go out that way so they churched up the story to sound like an accident.

Na, don't eat 'em. You put them in the pocket of your lip like chew. Between the caffiene and the ultra-nasty concentrated taste of coffee, you were forced to stay awake.

    off topic

    Treo and JD,

Y'all should be happy to know that the newer "First Strike" meals (MRE++) comes with a packet of caffeine gum. It tastes like ... well ... like bitter, powdered caffeine with a hint of cinnamon.

But it works better than that old instant coffee stuff.
