    Happy Birthday, Duke!

Included: My little film critique...and some other stuff.

He rode tall in the saddle, and his exploits entertained generations of Americans, and heading into the Memorial Day weekend, his birthday has brought sunshine to the Pacific Northwest.

Rio Lobo, The War Wagon, Chisum, The Green Berets..... probably a couple others but those leap to mind.

15 or 20 years ago I was laid up for a few weeks, two winters in row, recuperating from orthopedic surgery. We had a neighbor widow lady who socialized with my wife and doted on our kids.

Her late husband had a huge collection of John Wayne videotapes, and I was fortunate to enjoy a couple every day as my condition wouldn't allow me to do much else.

Or more accurately, two tough old birds doing what needs to be done despite the obstacles in their way.
It was a fine one. Two great actors nearing their swan songs.
    Underrated and largely forgotten.

I watched it 3 weeks ago, and was reminded of how well Kate and Duke meshed together. If there is a Heaven,I sure hope they are still tangling together up there.

How 'bout In Harm's Way -- only one of the greatest Navy movies ever -- with Patricia Neal, Brandon Dewilde, Patrick O'Neal, Carroll O'Connor, Burgess Meredith, Henry Fonda, Slim Pickens, Paula Prentiss, Tom Tryon and, of course, Kirk Douglas?

Next up, The Fighting Seabees, and as a nod to my leatherneck brothers, Sands of Iwo Jima ...

Everything I know about cops, their respect for the citizens of this country and its Constitution, as well as the state of policing in this country ... I learned from the Internet.

Does Rio Lobo, Rio Bravo and El Dorado count as one movie or three?

Then there's Hondo, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Cowboys, The Alamo The Horse soldiers, Rio Grande. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon,

I didn't like Chisum because it was soooooo historically inaccurate
(Kinda like some of the posts I read around here about dairy farming )

We can add The Big Trail,1930 The Flying Leathernecks,1951 and The High and the Mighty,1954 to that great long list.

We could spend days discussing his career, his films, his politics ,his women, his woes and joys. His life was a once in a century life.

I think he lived it to the fullest. There were regrets, not serving in World War II was certainly number one. He died regretting that.

But over all, the Duke's plus's counterweight the minus's and he comes out as a fine American and a great performer,IMO.
