    Knife info wanted...

What do I have here? Both sides are a soft silver metal that is engraved, 2 edged blades, one straight pick. Knife blades stamped with a Spur and "Sheffield" above the spur and "England" below the spur as shown below:

any ideas if it has any value?

The knife is 3 1/8" in length folded and 5/8" wide on the wide end and .5" on the narrow end. The blades are 1.5" and 1.75" and the "pick" is 2.25" in length.

Either a fake or old ( pre WWII?)

See some knives marked Sheffield here:

I imagine you have to look at some auctions to determine price.

It is a First Lieutenants knife. On a Navy the First Lt, is responsible for First or Deck Division. The spike is a Marlinspike which is used to untangle line and is helpful for tying certain knots such as Reef knots and Monkeyfists. I have only seen 2 that nice, both belonged to Senior officers of Her Royal Majesty's Navy. I have seen some nicer than average given as gifts to officers who transfer or are reassigned as recognition for being a fairly decent officer. We made mugs and steins out of 5in powder cases for much the same reason.

Regular Bosun's are issued a similar knife, but it's knot nearly that pretty.

If you want I can call a friend and get the NSN.

NSN is National Stock Number for example a Surefire L2 Lumamax has a NSN of 6230-01-522-6610 that is the number you give to the supply clerk or servmart and pick it up.

Hero, I'm surprised you never came across a Chief or PO1 that had one. I remember that out of 4 1stLt's only one got one. They are hard to find on the civilian market, but Navy Supply has them. My friend who served on the George Washington in First and Third Division has one that until he got it had sat in storage since the late 70's. There was a gentleman that I met at the Baltimore VA, he was issued his '43, it was made in 1916 or 1918 (you can't really tell be cause it is so worn, but it was sharp and well oiled, just like its owner).

Thanks for all the info! I was a snipe and didn't hang out with the deck apes very much I'm afraid (LOL).

If someone wants it, pay shipping and I will give it to them. I would rather see it in the hands of someone who would appriciate it than gathering dust here.

The knife has been sold. Thanks guys! I only charged shipping as I am not in it for money, more for curiosity than anything...
