    Ruger LC9

My wife is interested in a Ruger LC9 so I'm looking for opinions from current or previous owners. A few reviews I've read have shown some quality control issues (magazine release button inoperable, sights falling off).

My wife is small so on body carry with even a compact M&P would be impractical.

I'm not interested in anything less than 9mm for personal defense or anything from KelTec (far too many quality control issues).

I've been eyeballing one for myself. The price seems right and I AM a fan of 9mm. I wish I could offer advice but I sure as heck will read the reviews. And if your o'l lady picks one up, please let me know how it goes eh?

i bought mine hoping it was a scaled up LCP as i am not a fan of the built in key lock, the thumb safety, nor the magazine disconnector.

ive really tried to like this gun, it has been flawless out of the box for several hundred rounds, but i prefer the kel-tek PF9 features instead.

    LC9 vs SHIELD

Modified slightly from an earlier post I made comparing M&P SHIELD to LC9 (I own both).
She may want to also consider the SHIELD?

Just fished out my LC9 as I wanted to compare 'em.
    1. Slides pretty much the same AFA thickness, etc, but the Ruger is slightly more rounded at the top edges.
    2. The Ruger has a much longer trigger pull, but it's smooth.
    3. The Shield has a much shorter trigger pull, and although folks rave about it, I think it still feels slightly 'spongy'.
    4. The Shield is striker fired, the Ruger hammer fired (if that makes a difference to him).
    5. The Ruger seems to have a thinner grip, and the slide is slightly shorter in length.
    6. All controls 'bout the same (safety, slide lock).
    7. Prefer the black body mags of the Ruger (more discreet for civilian carry).
    8. No pinky rest for SHIELD 7-rd mag from either Pearce Grips (they've been given a motivational boot) or S&W.
    9. SHIELD 8-rd magazine spacer friction held-will slide up body! Folks are already using electrical tape (under the spacer), silicon, glue, etc on em in order to lock 'em in place. I'm thinking 'bout trying hairspray, since I used to install motorcycle grips with it (dries to a non-permanent tack).

If I was going for ultimate concealability, I think I'd give the nod to the Ruger?
If not, the Shield does fit my hand a little better, plus the rougher texture of the Shield grip is reassuring.

The Shield is a single stack, but it looks like the rounds are half-staggered.
The LC9 is cheaper, but how much I don't know - our local shop is currently out of 'em.

Thanks for the information guys. I really like the M&P shield as well, and I have a M&P 9mm that I carry since she stole my Sig P229.

The only problem is I haven't been able to find a shield in stock, there is a gun show coming up though.

If nothing else I've been wanting to pick up a M&P compact 9mm for me, if she likes it she could use that until I was able to find a shield.

You might wanna cruise on over to YouTube and do a search for comparison videos etc (realizing that YouTube is like a box of chocolates...).

I don't know if your wife has any trigger issues, but someone was recently looking for trigger mods for their LC9, claiming his wife had a heckuva time with the trigger - if your wife is in the same boat, she may prefer the shorter trigger stroke of the SHIELD?
I don't know how the trigger pulls compare AFA weight, but the SHIELD definitely has a shorter stroke.

I got my SHIELD for $399 at our no-haggle gun shop - don't know what they're going for in your neck o' the woods?

EDIT: I just noticed you said she stole your P229, so she shouldn't have any trouble with an LC9 trigger!

Is the Shield magazine compatible with the M&P? I realize it'd protrude but it would be a bonus.

One of the reasons I love the AR is you can have 6 of them configured for completely different roles, different barrels and optics and have magazine compatibility.

Having magazines that only work in one model is really starting to get annoying.

I just noticed you said she stole your P229, so she shouldn't have any trouble with an LC9 trigger!
Yep, I have other guns I trust my life with, I carried the 229 for 7 years and it's the only one I trust her life with right now.

I seriously doubt it - the SHIELD is a single stack gun, but the rounds in the mag are slightly staggered-they say the reason they did so was to jam that one extra round in. I would think the SHIELD magazine would be thinner than a normal M&P double stack?

It might actually function, but I'm guessing it would be an awful loose fit in the magwell?

doh, I knew that! That's what happens when posting at work.

She's taking her CWL class from a friend next Saturday and he has a few M&Ps so we'll see what happens.

if she can reasonably shoot a D/A revolver she will do the same with the LC9.

the long trigger pull is what i hear from folks who have little revolver experience and expect because its a semi auto that it will have a short trigger like a glock or what have you.

the LC9 is a fine gun for its intended purposes, i just dont care for the over use of "safety" features. had ruger simply scaled up their LCP id be a ruger fan for life. much like the LCR-22 i bought and became disenchanted with because of all the hype of the trigger pull being superior. well in the rim fire gun that just isnt the case unless you compare it to a charter arms or something.

What he said! Seriously extra protrusions and ways to prevent the gun from going bang when needed don't turn me on.
