What's up with this Gun Broker auction?

    Here's the auction number:
    297696168

    http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=297696168

Look at the winning bidder. Note the winning bidder's bid is listed as an early date but doesn't show up early in the bidding process. How does this happen?

This is the first time I have seen a bidder come in at the end with the high bid on the last day of the auction but with a bid from nearly a week before. The winning bid was the same as a different bidder.

Is it just me or does something smell bad with this auction?

I just looked at the 15 bids. I agree, it does not make sense with the 10 day time lapse.Perhaps some odd glitch.

All my dealings with them have been quite pleasant.
But certainly questions are being asked about this auction across the net.

The winning bidder bid big up front. All the other bidders just raised the price incrementally, but he kept being the winner.

    No, he did not.
I was high bidder until today. Three time my bid increased due to higher bidders. The winning bid did not show up until today, 8/7/12.

Sounds like the winning bidder used the website's "AutoBid" feature. Apparently his maximum high bid was more than yours.

Ebay has that feature. I did not remember GunBroker having it.You are probably correct,Bullseye. Its a blind auto bid.

Gunbroker has had that for several years now.

That Browning Gold Hunter is a nice shotgun. It and the SX2 are the only shotguns I have ever held that fit me right off the rack. I ended up buy a used Gold Hunter in my LGS for $485. It had a ding in the forearm that I was able to work out with steam and refinish.

Turns out the original owner traded it because it kept jamming. At first, I had the same problem and I thought I had bought a lemon. Then, I was perusing a shotgunner's forum, and discovered that the preservative applied at the factory was causing the FTEs. The Cabela's website had a how-to on getting rid of all the factory preservative. I followed the instructions, and the darn thing has been reliable ever since.

    Good luck on finding one!

Having bid on several things on GB, I agree this looks weird.
Auto bid would keep him the high bidder.
If you were the high bidder, then he didn't have an earlier high bid.

The only thing that makes sense is that he used a "snipe" program,
where a third party holds your bid until the last second. E-Bay does that, I don't know about GB.

Seems like the 15 min rule would kill off sniping, unless the auction ends in the middle of the night.

Is there a way to contact GB?

Also, I'm not sure what good it does to not show bids until the auction ends, or have the bidders names hidden. (a**k)

However, I like Gunbroker, and have never had a problem.

I was high bidder for a number of days before his bid showed up as the winning bid and his bid was dated nearly a week before my bid. How does that work?

Sniping sounds possible. Is it also possible to negate the 15 minute rule with a sniper?

I put an inquiry into BG tech support to see if they can answer the issue. The final selling price was above what I was willing to pay for one, so no great loss. However, I wasn't the only one bidding on it, so if it was a "snipe" of some sort that can outwit the 15 minute rule trigger, then someone may have been cheated, especially the seller.

    Not that I know of.
However if the auction ends at something like 3am, chances are that most of the bidders won't be watching those 15 minutes.
If I were to sell, I'd want the auction to end at, oh, 8 pm Saturday night.

    How's this for a non-answer from GB:
The winning bidder would have been listed as the winning bidder from the time his bid was entered. The bid history lists bids by the bid amount, not the time entered or the time they appeared on the site.
    Here's the "Bid History":
Ends On or After 8/5/2012 9:35:00 PM ET

    7/26/2012 7:46:17 PM EST $555.00 s***g A+(107) *
    8/5/2012 9:07:26 PM EST $550.00 3***e A+(14)
    8/3/2012 10:14:13 PM EST $526.00 R***o A+(11)
    8/3/2012 10:13:09 PM EST $507.00 R***o A+(11)
    8/3/2012 10:12:44 PM EST $477.00 R***o A+(11)
    8/3/2012 10:12:16 PM EST $466.00 R***o A+(11)
    8/3/2012 3:05:01 PM EST $450.00 d***s NR
    8/2/2012 11:01:27 PM EST $421.00 w***6 A+(12)
    7/30/2012 9:58:45 PM EST $410.00 w***6 A+(12)
    7/24/2012 8:51:51 PM EST $400.00 d***2 A+(31)
    7/24/2012 12:10:24 PM EST $340.00 p***s A+(67)
    7/24/2012 2:48:37 AM EST $265.00 b***7 A+(55)
    7/22/2012 10:53:10 PM EST $250.00 p***s A+(67)
    7/23/2012 10:16:24 PM EST $248.00 w***6 A+(12)
    7/22/2012 11:11:33 PM EST $237.00 M***y A+(43)
Note I (R***o) was listed as the winning bidder for two days before the end of the auction. I was watching it pretty close.
Then 3***3e jumped in and was sniped by a bid that was supposedly entered on 7/26/12 but did not register until the auction closed. Baloney.

I wish I could keep my bid secret like that, too. If everyone could do that, there wouldn't be any bids show until the auction closed.

I still think something is wrong here.

You got sniped, we use it. I set my high bid it lets me know if I have been out bid and lets me up it if I wish. my bid goes in 5 seconds before the end of the auction.
