Thread: MechTech Carbine

    Question MechTech Carbine

    http://www.mechtechsys.com/index.php#

Has anyone here have experience building a carbine from one of these kits? Looks like you could have a pretty decent and unique little firearm.

Once you put a stock on it, doesn't it fall under BATFE rules, requiring a tax stamp on all that other nonsense? Or am I missing something.

If I go with this, I'm thinking a Glock lower with the telescoping stock, quad rail on the front, and some kind of a lightweight reflex sight.

You don't build, you assemble. It takes all of 40 seconds. I think this may (a) either fall into a grey area or (b) like our drug laws, be practically unenforceable.

My brother has one. He had a spare 1911 frame, so his is dedicated. It is a reasonable way to get into a pistol cartridge carbine, and I like it better than the Hi Point.

I've been thinking about one, all I'd need is a spare RIA frame.

Would the mechanism tech system work with a CS/officer frame?

I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but the frame on there is a Para Ord Warthog frame. It is an Officer length wide-body. You can just about use any 1911 frame on the 1911 upper. There are also Glock uppers for the other side.

Thanks for clearing that up. So is it a pretty reliable shooter?
The FAQs on their page recommend hotter +P loads; they claim (or disclaimer) that target loads might not have enough guts for the blowback action.

As noted, there's no "building" involved. It goes on and off just like the slide of the pistol.

In the laws themselves, it's quite legal to "build a rifle from a pistol, and then return it to it's pistol form" (you can thank Thompson-Center for that). What has confused the issue is that a few years ago, the revenuers opined that the law only covered TC firearms. They've recently reversed their opinion, FWIW.

[1] Opinions are like noses, everyone's got one and they're all full of hot air. ATF opinions are just that, and they can (and frequently do) change faster than the wind blows. ATF opinions are not the law, they're the current opinion of the law (and these tend to depend on who's residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue)
"Tactical" is a mindset, not an equipment list.

We shoot IPSC "major" loads with 200 gr LSWCs. I believe, but have not chronographed, that we get the performance out of the carbine that we would from a 45 Super in a 5 inch pistol. It is totally subjective, but I am basing this on number of milk jugs full of water that are penetrated by our handloads. With the carbine, we typically can blow up 6 and penetrate the 7th.

The MechTech is sold openly because ATF has decided it is kosher under Title I (1968 Gun Control Act, pistols and rifles) and Title II (1934 National Firearms Act, short barrel rifle including pistol with shoulder stock).

With the MechTech you are not putting a shoulder stock on a pistol (Title II SBR barrel length under 16" with a shoulder stock).

You are using the pistol frame w/o barrel & slide as the feeding/firing mechanism of the MechTech upper which meets rifle kit spex (16" or + barrel, overall 26" or +); you are making a Title I rifle out of a pistol. And under the last ATF rules I saw, since the stock is attached to the upper receiver with the barrel, you can convert the lower with the serial number back to a pistol by re-installing the pistol slide and barrel.

You must have acquired the pistol as a pistol in compliance with all federal, state and local concealable weapons laws. A legal catch is, if you sell the pistol frame attached to the carbine upper as a rifle (re-designed or constructed as a less restricted non-concealable Title I firearm), the buyer cannot subsequently use a pistol barrel and slide and convert the frame to a pistol (more restricted Title I concealable weapon). The pistol frame must be sold as a pistol with pistol slide and barrel, buyer and seller complying with all federal, state and local pistol laws; then the carbine upper can be installed in compliance with federal law on converting a pistol to a rifle. Most states, counties and cities don't try to prevent conversion from concealable to non-concealable, but a few states and cities may have Assault Weapons Bans AWBs aimed at semi-auto rifles.

I would worry about the kits with a seperate long barrel and stock for converting a pistol to a carbine. If you add the stock without removing the pistol barrel first, you have created a SBR even, temporarily, even if your next step is replacing the barrel. You must remove the barrel before adding in the stock.

I suppose I should update this.

The MechTech 1911 setup works SUPERBLY with an officer's size 1911 frame as the fire-control unit.

Shoots nicely, feeds HP from cheap mags, and is an all-around nice carbine.
Only minor complaints: Recoil is strange. The safety is hard to operate.
