    Interesting manhunt

The Alaska troopers are trying to track down a man named Teddy Kyle Smith for shooting his mother among other nut-related goings-on in the remote village of Kiana.

Now, Teddy (apparently) has shot two hunters 40 miles from the village and stolen their boat. The entire area is roadless and the troopers are moving around by boat and (presumably) helicopter.

The incident was reported on the Squirrel River at its confluence with the Omar River, roughly 40 miles northwest of the village. Troopers landed in Kiana, population 375, Wednesday morning, Eck said.

"They're watching the river," he said

Teddy Kyle Smith recently starred in a movie, but I'd say his dreams of stardom are at an end now:

Sad. I wonder how he managed that (presuming he did it); I don't usually think of hunters as being easy targets.

    Just too weird.
Guns, if they have a moral dimension, are good. Without guns, the strong can always dominate the weak; the many can always dominate the few; and men can always dominate women. A gun gives each person an agency equivalent to his (or her) moral standing. In my humble opinion, those who teach correct and proper gun use are doing G-d's work.

They've expanded on the story today. The hunters had just landed from an inflatable raft and were shot. Both will survive even though one was shot in the chest, so they were probably shot with a handgun though the story doesn't say. I assumed the shooter only wanted their boat and equipment rather than to kill them.

It's incredibly wild country and winter is closing in. You can't travel there except by river until the snow falls because you really can't walk far on muskeg. If they can't find him by air or on the rivers they'll go in with snow machines as soon as some snow falls.

Right now it seems like they're more interested in locking down the few villages accessible from the river. He'll either have to come out somewhere or they'll go in and get him when they can travel.

The guy is a native and an experienced hunter, so I assume he can survive out there as long as he wants.

Dogs, lots and lots of big dogs and a few blood hounds but mostly large dogs of the unfriendly persuasion. If they spot him drop the dogs by chopper, they are sure to be in a foul mood after a ride like that. Get a few wolf mix breeds in there, this guy deserves no mercy.

Yeah, all over. He had a raft with no engine and so the troopers just waited downstream with SWAT on both banks and took him without a shot being fired.

A great job, which is what you'd expect from the AK Troopers.

It's good that nobody else was hurt but I wanted to see this mother shooting sum beech try to out run a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a pair of Dobermans.

So did I. But that only happens in the movies.

The real poetic justice would have been for them to find parts of him in piles of steaming bear scat.

An insult to the peace and dignity of a civilized society is now removed from society. That a further insult to the peace and dignity wasn't necessary isn't that great of a tragedy. Personally I commend the officers involved for the use of such an effective strategy.

The original story said she died under "suspicious circumstances" though they would not specify what was suspicious about it.

Earlier this week a woman was found injured under "suspicious circumstances" along a road in Anchorage. It was only released yesterday that what they found suspicious was that she was shot in the head.

It's typical in Alaska that the cops release almost no information. I'm fine with that.
