New twist on Stephanopoulos flap: Memo that said gun control ineffective

The Washington Times yesterday offered a new twist in the unfolding flap over former Clinton press aide George Stephanopoulos, now the embattled ABC News anchor, and it involves a memo on gun control reportedly written by an aide to former President Jimmy Carter that bluntly acknowledges most gun control laws don’t impact crime.

This memo, says the Washington Times story, allegedly led Stephanopoulos to try to “spark a gun debate inside the White House in 1994.” Translation: At least some Democrats – those who read the Powell memo, anyway – have apparently known for more than 20 years that gun control laws impact the wrong people.

...Or maybe they impact the right people - the TRUE target, that is: Namely, the law abiding who would resist subjugation.

The difference between Brian Williams and George Stephanopoulos? Brian Williams lied to improve his image. George lied (by omission) to mislead his viewers to promote his agenda. One of these things is more malicious.

I tracked down and read the Jody Powell memo of 1994. It was nothing new for 1994.

In 1977, the Democrat Carter Administration hired sociologist James D. Wright to investigate guns, crime, and violence in America. One reason cited to select him was his article "Demographics of Gun Control" in the left-wing The Nation Nov 1975. Wright brought on Peter Rossi and Kathleen Daly, all considered good liberal academics. Their first report was issued 1981 by the government with little fanfare: their research led them to conclude that gun control apparently has little impact on violent crime (and I picked up their hint that legal gunownership might have social benefits thwarted by gun control: I helped typeset this book at Kingsport Press and still have a proofset of the summary Chapter One dated 01/05/83 -- it was not just another typesetting job to me.).

Wright, Rossi and Daly expanded their research and released it commercially through Aldine publishers as "Under the Gun: Weapons, Crime and Violence in America" in 1983. Updated editions have appeared since then. Wright and Rossi also did the 1981 firearms using offender survey that led to their book "Armed and Considered Dangerous" which further undercut the assumptions supporting gun control.

Since Wright, Rossi, and Daly (1981, 1983), other studies confirming that gun control imposed on the law abiding does not impact criminal violence have appeared from Gary Kleck 1994, John Lott 1998, Centers for Disease Control 2003, National Research Council 2004. But the Democrat party still pounds its drum of hate for guns, gun owners, NRA, because the urban Democrat voter base is rabidly antigun--especially in cities run by a one-party machine.

The Democrat National Party has known since 1981 that gun control laws are a sham that makes no one safe. But they will use the urban fear and loathing of "red state trailer trash NRA gun nuts" to stir up votes for a lost cause and to attack the credibility anyone who questions the sacred cow status of the "gun control" plank in the party platform. Handgun prohibition had 60% support in the 1959 Gallup poll; the last Gallup poll on the subject had 25% support for handgun prohibition. They are appealing to a minority of voters who become more rabid as their numbers decline. But apparently the DNP is too heavily invested in being the party of gun control to turn back now.

For at least 35 years--from research funded by the Carter Administration--the DNP has known gun control is not at all what they so actively promoted in the 1960s with the holy gun control crusade and witchhunt.

Heat for Texas prof supporting gun control, while NY writer takes different tack

A professor at the University of Texas at Austin is taking heat today for an Op-Ed in the Dallas Morning News calling for restrictive gun control following the shootout in Waco, while an opinion in the New York Post yesterday warning that New York officials better pay close attention to this week’s concealed carry victory in the District of Columbia.

This is America, where rights aren’t abandoned because some people behave badly, and where people should never be required to justify the exercise of those rights. It is a nation of citizens, not subjects, and as Lipsky notes, the Second Amendment says the “people have the right to keep and bear arms. It said nothing about them having to show a good reason.”
