50 Question Quiz Contest: History,Literature,Politics,Sports. Ends December 20

Here's the Deal. We'll ask a total of 50 questions between now and December 20 covering the headline categories.

Whoever has the total of most correct cumulative answers will win a nice $50 Amazon gift card for Christmas. This should spread out the knowledge and dilute the affect of one person being an expert in a single subject. Also being fast on search engines will be somewhat neutralized

The first correct answer each day gets 1 point, I'll keep a posted running log and we move onward, I just hope there is enough interest to make it enjoyable and worth while. Even cool!

We'll headline each days category. Today:

    Sports

Q.The World Series began in 1903. What was the 1st WS played where both teams were based west of the Mississippi River.
Name the 2 teams and the year.

1944, the St Louis Cardinals National league and the St Louis Browns American league at Sportsman Park, home-field for both teams. Cardinals 4 games to 2.

That is correct. 1 point to Grmlin. But we need more action here. This thread might on as well be buried beneath Mammoth Cave!

I've asked for moderator permission to move it to GGD to get more views and perhaps get some new members. I'm waiting for a reply before moving on to today's question which will be in literature.

Hello,CD. There is no objection to using search engines or any legal means to get the answers.

What we need are enough people answering to make this project worthwhile. I sent out a message to 3 moderators late this AM. No answer yet.

I think your thread is best suited for the OT forum, unless you make the questions gun-related.

What is the unit of the reciprocal of electrical resistance? (Either the "old-fashioned" one or the modern one.)

    That would be the Ohm

^ Nope. Looking for the reciprocal of the Ohm.

I'm trying to point out to Johnny Dollar that "History, Literature, Politics, Sports" is a rather narrow area of "expertises" (plural), and trying to force technical areas into the question pool.

In addition, the answer for the "old" unit is a bit amusing.

I'm going to give the answer here, then withdraw.

The unit of electrical "Resistance" is the Ohm.

The unit of its reciprocal, or "Conductance," or 1/Ohms, is the Mho, which always struck me as pretty whimsical.

More recently, this has become the siemens -- a much more clumsy term, but in line with the notion that physical units should be named after scientists. And its plural is kind of awkward -- "Siemenses" --as well as probably being vaguely sexist.

Wow! There are actually a few living, breathing people here.
    That was an entertaining interlude.

J.T. Hunter was correct. 1 point to East St.Louis.

Also, I'm asking these questions off the top of my head with no research. All the Q & A are in my noodle. What's left of it. It's a game I play with my grandchildren on long summer driving vacations.

I have no tech, mech knowledge to speak of. My degree is in Liberal Arts, worthless, except for events of this nature!

I will add Geography and Entertainment as topics . That should broaden the field considerably.

I also have a suggestion for Bubbles and the other Admin/Mods.
Make the OT sub forum visible to "Guests". They can't see it.

This may make for some increased interest and added membership to GRM. We have to have more activity on the forum for it to become viable again.

I would rather be here than on any other firearms forum, however, there must be action to maintain interest, whatever the activity.

Do other members agree on this suggestion?

    Politics

The Republican is the Junior of the 2 major USA political parties.
In what year and in what city did the GOP hold its 1st nominating Convention?

And who were the eventual Nominees for President and Vice President and what states did each represent?

What was the eventual outcome in the General Election of that year?

The first Republican National Convention was held at Lafayette Hall in Pittsburgh on February 22–February 23, 1856. At this convention, the Republican Party was formally organized on a national basis, and the first Republican National Committee was elected. The first Republican National Convention to nominate a presidential candidate convened from June 17–-June 19, 1856 at the Musical Fund Hall in Philadelphia. Pres nominee John C. Freemont, Ca. VP nominee William Dayton, New Jersey, Republicans lost.

This was actually a little tough to get all the information.

    Exclamation

Correct answer on all counts. 2 points now to Grmlin. I see there was no feedback on my proposal to allow guests to view this OT sub forum.

At this moment there are 2 members (1 besides myself) and 39 "guests", viewing the entire forum.

Without guest access, this whole exercise on the OT sub forum is an exercise in futility. Since they can't see it, they have no motivation to become members because of it. It needs to be opened up.

Just my opinion of course. It would be very gratifying to get some other opinions by members and Admin/Mods.

I agree with JD, why can't guest's view and participate?

I enjoy the questions, it gives me a chance to expand my knowledge.

Is that Miss, Mississippi or Missouri?
And Minnesota is not entirely east of the Mississippi River so that is incorrect.
