The Winchester 1892 was factory produced in
.32-20 Winchester
.38-40 Winchester
.44-40 Winchester
.25-20 Winchester
.218 Bee (late production)
and the caliber should be marked on the barrel. The marking might be obscured by dirt or patina as the gun aged.
Winchester made approx 1,007,608 Model 1892s between 1882 and 1945. Spain also made over a million "El Tigre" copies of the 1892 in .44-40 (".44 Largo") only between 1914 and 1941.
The 1892 is a very strong action and gunsmiths have converted them to other calibers for their customers. Popular conversions include .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum and .45 Colt. If the caliber is not marked on the barrel, it could be a conversion. A gunsmith should be able to measure the bore and chamber to determine caliber if it is a converted rifle.
Cogito me cogitare; ergo, cogito me esse.
Carl,
Thanks, that may be the case, a converted rifle. I have examined the barrel with a magnifying glass and I can find no markings.
