Same criteria as for little boys.

Get them something with little to no recoil (I'm suggesting .22LR) that fits them somewhat well (youth model or cut down stock) with decent sights to learn with and capable of mounting a scope for later use.

By all means go with a youth model, but do not forget about the weight of various firearms. What size is you wife and what size are you girls. Is your wife a petite 5 feet and your girls small too or is your wife like mine at 5 feet 9 inches? Smaller frames require smaller firearms like the Cricket. Larger children can handle the larger youth models like the CZ.

    Definitely a .22 rifle.

The CZ 452 scout model, with the single shot "fake" magazine, is what my daughter started with at 7 and still uses at 10 (with a "real" mag now) ... and I have to say that dad and mom like it, too. It fits bigger kids and young adults; it works; the bolt action makes it easy to observe the weapon's safety status; it's easy to clean; it's accurate; it's a machine that feels good to use.

I can't recommend this set up highly enough for the father and/or mother of a girl or boy who will be learning responsible gun use.

As an experienced uncle, I can recommend:

    CZ 452 Scout, http://www.cz-usa.com/product_detail.php?id=5

    Marlin 15Y, http://www.rrarms.com/cat_images/G915Y.JPG

    Savage Cub, http://www.savagearms.com/cub.htm
Software (training) is to hardware (guns) as three is to one.

I gave my 10 yo son his first .22 for his birthday, Marlin mdl 60, same as my first. He LOVES it. For Christmas, my 4 yo daughter got a pink cricket, I think it was about $125 used. It is still a little big for her, but she LOVES it and really enjoys the time we spend together with it.

For the money you can't go wrong with the Savage Cub .22 rifle. It is only a little more expensive than the chipmunk/cricket, and vastly superior in terms of quality. My son has had his since he was six. It's just starting to fit him now, but he could shoot it at six by putting the stock over his shoulder. Great little rifle.

I have seen a pink .22 rifle at Gander Mtn. Not sure of the make though.

    Probably a cricket.

Neat little guns. A smidge smaller and lighter than the Savage Cub, so they'll fit kids at younger ages. But they won't last them as long. Always some trade off

Savage Cub is my favorite, hands down. Much better than a cricket or chipmunk, only a smidge more expensive. The cricket is a nice rifle though, and the pink versions can increase your girls' interest levels. I'm planning to get a pink wood-stocked cricket for my daughter this summer. My son already has a cub.

Marlin 39 is a great suggestion. Now, if only they weren't so popular and expensive ($450 and up).

Henry makes a youth-sized .22 lr lever. $240 shipped from Budsgunshop. 4 1/2 lbs. And you'd be supporting a company that just moved into anti-gun north-coastal Jersey.

CZ 452/3 also an excellent choice. I'd go without the complications of magazines (unless you get a blind box), for a first gun.

Maybe even a pump-action .22lr. Taurus makes a 16-17" barrel pump, winchester 62-style. Or you can go with the original winchester 62A, or something like the Remington Model 12. Plenty of them used, fairly inexpensive, and you can have the barrel and stock cut down to size.

I wouldn't let a 7 year old use a shotgun, other than a 28 or 410. A flinch does not lead to good fundamentals.

something in a pistol caliber using crimped, or plastic cup shotshells might be fun, would a 9mm work?

my daughter started with a bb gun at age 5. her first "real" gun was an early christmas present in 2008 at age 6.

yes, she picked it out(its a crickett). it has since been fitted with a scope and she shoots bulls eyes at 25 yards bench rest with ease.

P.S. this gun was $110.00 at the wal-mart in Opelika Alabama bought 22Nov08.
